Hey Everyone!
This is my first post - having recently joined. I'm one of those old farts who bought Guilds a million years ago (Hoboken) because they were way cool and because they weren't Martins. Subsequently I have owned a wide variety of guitars but my first "string" of players have always been Guilds.
Couple of questions (pls forgive as I'm certain this has been covered before),
I have been hijacked into playing at church (told ya I was old), I'm looking to amplify a 1979 Blonde JF50,
any suggestions? I bought a cheap Dean Markley & it sorta sucks.
On the string front, I've used Elixirs for years because they lasted and I was playing only now and then. Would anyone offer suggestions for a more suitable string for a regular gig?
Thanks and stay well,
timbo

Sevaral of the guys here are really big on something called a K&K "Pure Western" pickup. I've never played one myself, but sure believe the guys that do.

Welcome to the site and good luck with your search,
West

Welcome to LTG! You'll get a lot of string recommendations... lotta folks here play John Pearse. Either 80/20s or Phosphor bronze. Try 'em both and see what suits your ear.

Wow bought a Guild because you didnt like Martin -Ive been their (still think those 70 ish Martins lacked soul ) Im not a new Guild person -Think the new Martins make up for the old thou -Im looking as well for either a pick-up to play out with as well --i might suggest that if this is only a once in a while play out - maybe a decent shot gun mic , like a Shure SM57 might be the best solution - your church might already have one - worth the check . By the way ,welcome to the Forum -

Thanks to all,
I have never tried John Pearse strings, I'll give 'em a shot.
I'm not interested in drilling holes in Blondie so I'll keep looking for a better soundhole pickup.
Stay well, keep strumming.

Timbo,

If you're looking for a soundhole pickup, some that you might consider are the LR Baggs M1 (I tried it but found the sound too "electric" for my taste), the Fishman Rare Earth (blend version - with internal mic - also available), or the Seymour Duncan Magmic. I have the magmic in my Lowden right now and am very pleased with it. To my ear, its the best sounding of the three.

And, as I noted in a post somewhere else around here, good quality cables make a significant difference to your sound!

Opinions are a dime a dozen 'round here, so keep some large grains of salt handy.

welcome,

Bill

Hi Timbo - I'm (a) and old fart, (b) like D'Addarios, (c) hate Elixirs

Welcome to LTG - you'll get plenty of help and opinions from the members, but the main rules are post often, and try to veer any topic away from it's original subject  Request the CN tower picture frequently, and don't mention window sills - it gets Graham over excited

Hey, & welcome.

Iv'e have good luck with a Fishman Rare Earth sound hole pickup, & a LR Baggs PARA DI preamp. The pickup's magnetic, (no microphone) but works for me in a band. If I was a solo performer, I'd want something with a mic, I think. I run it to to a powered monitor and to the PA.

P.S. I'm old too, & play in church.

Welcome.

"not Fenders" in my case but there are a few of us who were the the orginal purchaser of what are now our vintage Guilds.

Oh yeah, my most recent public "performances" have been in church so you're not alone there, either.
