Hello to all, new member here
My first love is my '66 D 44 pearwood that I have picked gently for the last 38 years.
Recently off ebay, I picked up a 1965(?) MkII serial #38926. What has me a little confused is according to the guildguitars, 1965 serial #'s have a two letter prefix, followed by three numbers. 1964 serial #'s contain five numbers, but it lists the last # for 1964 as 38636.
Any information would be appreciated.
By the way, its a nice little guitar, rough cosmetically, but structurally quite good, and plays well, for an "axe in a poke".
(couldnt dare say pig in a poke)

Steve,

Welcome to LTG.

Hopefully Hans Moust will see your post and chime in with the records for your guitars. The dating information on the Guild site is not to be trusted. His book covers the era that your guitars were presumably made in.

Again, welcome aboard!!!

Hello Steve,

Welcome! Actually, the explanation is quite simple. The last number for 1964 was indeed #38636 but the 5-digit serial number system didn't stop on Dec. 31, 1964. The series continued for quite some time into 1965 after which Guild started a new numbering system with a 2-letter prefix for each individual model. The last number of the 'old' system that they used during 1965 was # 46606, which makes your guitar a 1965 model.

I looked in my database real quick and I noticed that your Guild was completed in 'final assembly' on Friday Jan. 22, 1965. The weird thing is that the guitar is listed as a Mark I. Now it is possible that the person who wrote up the numbers in the ledger made a mistake, but it is also possible that you don't have a Mark II, but a Mark I. It's very easy to check this since a Mark I will have a mahogany top, whereas a Mark II should have a spruce top. Just let us know what the outcome is or post a close-up photo of the top if you can't tell the difference between the two wood species.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

So, do all MARK I's have a Mahogany Top or just the Mark I's in the 1960's?

Actually, I was talking about the obvious difference between a Mark I and a Mark II during that particular period, but the Mark I had a 'mahogany' top until it was discontinued during the early '70s. The Mark IIs from the '70s can have a 'cedar' top.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Thanks for all the responses
What an excellent site for all of us and thanks to Hans for the clarification. I will get some pictures up, that is a skill set I'm still working on but should be able to post soon. A friend and local luthier had a look at the Mk I and confirmed it looks in great shape. He liked it better than a 1975 Mk III, that I have. I thought the tops on the Mk III was spruce, but he said it was cedar. Anyone have info on this? Sounds good to my ear either way but good to have the facts.
Good day to all

Hello again Steve,

Cedar is very much possible on a Mark III from the '70s. That doesn't mean it is cedar but if you can post a close-up photo of the top, we could have a look as well.

Sincerely,
