New guy here, was hoping to get some help here with a Guild guitar I recently pulled from my parent's attic. It's one I picked up at a yard sale for $12 many moons ago and forgot I had. Over the weekend I went up to the attic to get a guitar stand for a new electric I recently bought and stumbled into it so I decided to haul it home and check it out in the new age of the internet.

It's a Guild model A50 bl. It's an arch-top f-hole jazz guitar, blonde in color (the "bl" in the serial no.?). Serial number is 42737. Did a little poking around, it's not the A50 from the nineties, but definitely the Granada or Cordoba from the 50's-60's. Has no pickup or electrics. Was made in Hoboken, NJ which is cool cause I'm from Jersey.... It has the original hard shell case, which has the Guild stamped emblem, latches all around, very sturdy case.

Unfortunately, it has a crack about 6-7 inches long that starts on the back of the neck just below the headstock and runs about a third or so of the way along the back of the neck. It was this way when I found it at the yardsale, hence the reason I didn't mess with it at the time and stuck it in the attic.

I tried to tune it up but it didn't seem that stable and I didn't want to push my luck and make it worse. Could be just the old strings stretching but I thought I would get it to a professional luthier to decide. Other than the crack it is in pretty decent shape, not checked and not all beat up. The headstock veneer is lifting slightly, and the mother-of-pearl logo is lifting out a little. Also, the fretboard seems to have shrunk a little because the fret edges are sticking out just slightly and need to be trimmed.

I would love any information on dating this instrument, production figures, market value or any other info about it. I would also like some advice on the repair, what the repair should cost, and suggestions for a luthier in the Southern NJ area that could get this very interesting piece back into players condition.

thanks,
marty

Welcome Gibson Guy,

Does your guitar look like this? [img:338:450]http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid215/pe875f537a94d5a88c5c4988d06a9fe6b/ecd2f822.jpg[/img]

Jeff, close but the tailpiece is different. It has a sort of a triangle shape with the letter "G" cut out near the bottom, and the pick guard is sort of a stepped shape with the word Guild on it in gold, 50's or 60's style lettering.

Anybody know the date on this? I'm assuming 1965 but not sure.

Can't help with the date, GG, but the part you're describing is known best as a Guild "harp" tailpiece.

Good luck, and welcome aboard!

Update...

Well, I got the ole girl back from the luthier on Friday and spent the weekend picking at it at my girlfriend's house (where it will now reside) and all I can say is WOW! This thing has a really clear, bright sound and it plays like butter. The repair guy loved it and was falling all over it... when I went to pick it up it drew a crowd, everybody in the music store was trying to get a look at the $12 yard sale special.

The thing that amazes me is how immaculate the condition is now that it is cleaned up... we determined that the crack was from an overtightened truss rod so the assumption is it was cracked then put away for at least a couple of decades before I came into it, so it may have very little actual play time relative to the age.

The body and binding is perfect, except for some slight yellowing of course, and even the inside is clean and not dusty and the sticker is like new. I believe it is a Brazilian Rosewood board and the fretwork cleaned up very nicely... nice innotation and no buzzing anywhere. The repair guy did an amazing job of putting the headstock veneer back together as it had lifted slightly and the Guild logo is back flush as it had lifted out slightly.

Anyway, if anyone has any idea about the date based on the sn (42737) please let me know. I'm amazed at how well this thing was built which is most likely the reason it survived hybernation in the attic for possibly three decades or more. I'll try to post some pictures if I can get my camera working.

Nice find Gibson Guy! Welcome to the LTG forum.

According to the serial number, your guitar is most probably a 1965. The stairstep pickguard further reinforces that fact, since they appeared in 1965. The Guild acoustic archtops don't pop up so often.
