Hello everyone.

I found you all while looking for some information about Guild's serial numbers and history. I was preparing to purchase an F512 that has a 1971 neck and bridge (with Florentine inlays) on a newer, unmarked, body. The lack of a label, fancy inlays, and obviously newer wood of the body still has me a little confused, but the guitar sounds good and plays well -- so the rest is just important to intellectual curiosity.

My father has had a late sixties 212 XL since before I was born, and after having a really cheap guitar for a while, I bought a JF4 -12NT in 1993. I have never really been happy with that guitar, but finding a jumbo 12 string has not proved an easy task. Many guitar shops seem to think that one acoustic 12 is more than enough, and most 12's seem to be set up for gentle chimey rhythm playing, which isn't what I'm looking for.

I play and sing a lot of John Hurt and Leadbelly songs, and am a definite amateur -- always thinking that I need to make more time to practice and get better. I play with my fingers or finger picks, and eschew amplification.

I gave a copy of the "Guild Guitar Book" to my father for Christmas, but I am still interested in more information about Guild's history and their design & production changes over the years. It seems that neck & nut widths have mostly shrunk over the years, bridges have gotten smaller, string spacing closer, saddles narrower, and I think I read here that there was an increase in soundboard thickness at some point. I am curious about what drove the design philosophy over the years and how much was client driven verses other factors.

I look forward to getting to know you all,

Alec

Scratch and Guildmark are the 12 players here, along with some others. They are the two that I've heard up close and personal. I've got a JF30 12, and really like the guitar.....set up very nicely, the maple jumbo sounds like a million.

Welcome,
West

Welcome Alec. Prepare to become Guilded and hopelessly addicted to these pages, just to see what you might be missing in the wonderful world of GAS! Lots to share here and something for everyone, so don't be shy....just dive in!
I'm also a big fan of Leadbelly, and I can't help but think of him every time I strum a big chord on my 12 string. Hard to beat 'Goodnight Irene' on a 12 string.

Later,
Joe

I keep him on retainer to say that.

If you got The Guild Guitar Book, you have the premier source of Guild info already. And fortunately the author is a member of this forum and is very generous at responding to questions. A few fellows who worked at the Rhode Island Guild factory are also members and might be able to expand your Guildification.
Personally, I have only experienced some of the trends you mentioned on the GAD series - especially the string spacing. But all of the differences, I think, are mostly between models - not so much differences over time on specific models. But what differences there are might reflect changes in popular playing styles, or changes in production management over the years. Some of the reductions you cited might even be (God forbid) cost-cutting measures. I have no particular insight into that, but let's hear what some others have to say.

Would love to see some photos of that F-512 "hybrid"!

Welcome aboard.
Post well. Post often.

Someday maybe Mark will let me stand in his shadow, but nobody has more fun trying to play one than me!

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

There seem to be quite a few 12 string owners hiding out around here, in addition to some (er, one?) who have burgeoning collections. I hope you have perfect pitch 12String. (Just the jealousy talking).

I will get some photos of the 512 up at some point . . . though my web-time is normally pretty thin.

Goodnight Irene is my wife's standing favorite song, but she likes Duncan and Brady pretty well, and now Black Girl (In the Pines) is moving into the rotation. Leadbelly was sure it would be a hit, too bad he didn't live to see it happen.

Hi Alec and welcome from another 12 stringer. I got interested in the 12 via Pete Seeger, The Byrds, The Rooftop Singers, the looking-for bands Searchers and Seekers and I really liked it's integration into early Rolling Stones work like Tell Me, Congratulations, As Tears Go By, Heart of Stone, and others. Growing up in Washington DC, I had the pleasure of seeing John Hurt several times in the mid-60s when he was appearing regularly at the Ontario Place.

Are you saying Maestro that it isn't when all the tuning pegs line up and the guitar is still in tune ... so much to learn ...

Welcome Alec! CJ
