CT NEWS 8 just specifically mentioned Greenwoods Rd (former Guild current Ovation shop), New Hartford as a target area. Thought it was interesting.

When I was a young kid in Md, the mere mention of a tornado seemed as foreign as a cyclone or volcanic eruption. Things that were relegated to distant geographical locations. Never here! We'd get the occasional hurricane or blizzard, but that was it. In the last 20 years, it seems the once 4-5 state "tornado alley" has expanded to 25+ states. Destructive touchdowns now happen here every couple years. Last Sept, one hit very close to home, having touched down in Annapolis on the very route I take to/from work just 2 hrs before I was on my way home.

^ Weather prediction has improved by orders of magnitude since then, MT. Tornado warnings are much more prevalent now, not that there weren't as many tornadoes back then.

I don't know about that. How many tornadoes did they have in Massachusetts thirty or forty years ago?

I'm from Maryland and didn't know we had so many til I saw this list of MD tornadoes since 1950: tornado-archive

I didn't realize one landed about 1/2 mile from my house, according to the map!! Hopefully none come that close again!

Here is Kansas. Whoa!!! https://data.delmarvanow.com/tornado-archive/kansas/

You can drop down menu your state above the map. Interesting to see.

^ could be wrong across the state, Rocky, but there was a micro-tornado that damaged a house in my neighborhood over 30 years ago. Nothing in recent years. There was a nasty, long one that did some major damage out west of me about 10 years ago. Anyway, I'm not sure I have data to back up my claim. :)

Looking at CT
27 tornadoes in the 20 years from 1950-1969
49 tornadoes in the 20 years from 2002-2021

One year from 1950-2001 with 5 or more tornadoes
Five years from 2002-2021 with 5 or more tornadoes

I'm not a statistician, but for a place that's not exactly tornado alley, that feels significant.

True, there were reported funnels, but the majority back before the 90's were mostly class 0, w/ some occasional 1's and 2's. Now we are seeing 2's and 3's w/ much more regularity. Of course the cost of destruction increases w/ population/development. I have an old friend that went into the Navy and wound flying weather tracking planes out of Pax River Naval Air Station in southern Md. Now he works for NOAA flying prop planes directly into hurricanes out of McDill AFB in Fla. (his first was Andrew! ) When it's not hurricane season here, he's either tracking storms around the world or chasing tornados around the US. He has told me that without a doubt, the severity and regularity of dangerous weather has increased in the last 30 years.

Fair enough, Rocky. Thanks for the update.

So was there any damage down the coast from yesterday's warnings?

Not on the right side of the state, but to be fair, I haven't seen what's happened on the left/wrong* side.

*It's a joke. :)

Update - there doesn't seem to be any on local TV websites.

Wow, I was surprised at all the activity in Nevada!! Not that we can't have severe weather but it did surprise me. Last week had to be one of the windiest on record. Blowing so hard everywhere and for one whole day the dust was so bad you couldn't see your hand in front of your face!! People couldn't see to drive, lots of accidents and damage. Thought of going somewhere and couldn't see the house across the street and decided it was a good day to stay home. Weather is obviously changing.....

Without a doubt. One of the more practical college courses I ever took was Oceanography. It, more than any other science course, explains how the world works. The oceans dictate our weather. When there are changes in water temps, the currents , air steams, everything, is effected. It's nothing the planet hasn't seen before. I'm not concerned. Nature has a way of righting itself. Sadly for us, the solution is likely ridding it of....us.
