Browsing thru the local acoustic room today & spotted a very shiny little mahogany number hanging where they used to keep the Tacoma Guilds. Picked her up & sure enough it's a GAD M20. Salesman told me it was Sappelle but it looked like mahogany to me.

Very pretty little guitar, dramatic stripes in the hog & finished with some of the shiniest varnish I've ever seen. Maybe I just like small guitars but it seemed exceptionally pretty. Priced marked was $539.00.

I picked it up played it for about 10 minutes, Right off it doesn't hold a candle to my 57 F20, it's OK, plays very nicely & sounds much better than the similar Fender acoustic imports piled around. Noticeable cigar box sound compared to what I'm accustomed but better than it's Chinese cousins on display.

After doodling with the M20 for a while I picked up a Martin 0015 marked at $949.00. The extra $410 for the Martin buys you a pretty Plain Jane, basic satin finish, plain old run of the mill looking mahogany and a whole bunch more sound, a whole bunch. As it should be for almost twice the price, a very obvious tonal superiority in the Martin.

I'm hanging on to my F20, So there !!

Looks like the GAD M20 CT !

CT for Corduroy Top.

Speaking of which; you don't see corduroy around much these days.

When I was a kid, my Aunt made my brother and me corduroy suits, including vests.
That stuff was thick like nautical cordage. Quite stylish I must say in my hunter green duds.

Me, I actually prefer the satin finish and plain jane looks. I feel like any extra prettiness is just more materials and labors that I'm paying for that don't go toward the sound of the guitar.

And I guess I'm just a plain kind of guy. :)

I love it all!
Most of my guitars are plain and the money went into the sound.
I did just purchase a very nice looking Recording King guitar that has turned some heads.
It's a copy of a Martin D-41.

Martin has changed most of the newer 15 series woods from mahogany to sapele, but I've heard mixed reviews on how that impacts the sound... I do like the plainer/less stripey look of the mahogany. My '03 000-15 (mahogany) is a dynamite little guitar. It's amazing how much it opened up and sounded better & better over time. Not that it was ever dull or anything less than great... but it's incredible to see how the tones improved in 5 years.
