Oh, and one more thing! :D

Is there an agreement on which gauge strings work well with the Starfire IV's? I was thinking .11 flatwounds, maybe Thomastiks or something similar?

Prudy

Hi Prudy
I've been toying around with Thomastiks on my newly acquired X-700. Love them. The flatwound .11's are cool subdued jazz tone and the Thomastik "Be-Bop" round wounds have that cool jazz tone but noticebly brighter, more rockabilly-ish. I prefer the round wounds and am sticking with those for now, fits my play style. Just my two cents..........of course string selection is in the ear of the beholder..... :D
Regards,
Dan

I think I'm going to try those on my Gent. I just can't seem to get the right sound out of that thing. :?

Hey D,
The Thomastik Be-Bops may do the trick, although I gotta admit I'm not familiar with the Gent. When I received my x-700, someone on here reccomended flat wounds so I went to the local git shop. Guy at the counter interrogated me about my playing style and he suggested the round wound Be-Bops. I bought both the flat and rounds to check 'em out. Put the flats on first, I liked them but I was much more impressed when I switched them out for the Be-Bops. Matter of taste I'm sure. It was an expensive experiment as the strings were 20 bucks per set. Quite a bit more than my usual D'Addarios!!
Have fun if you decide to experiment..........

<sigh> The Gent was a compromise. I wanted a Starfire doublecut or a 335. I had just gotten married and it was my last discretionary purchase. Couldn't find a Guild dealer- at the time, all the smaller mom and pop stores were closing up and they tended to be the Guild shops. I ended up getting antsy and checked Gruhn out. No Starfires and all the Gibsons were about $200 dollars more than I had. I ended up settling for the Gretsch. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful guitar, not a scratch on it, except for a tiny nick in the binding(gotta get that fixed) and the usual worn gold plating.
It may be that it needs heavier strings or a different brand.
