Everyone hates the search. I hate the search, too, but I've learned to rely on using Google search which is frankly a PITA. Well, now the system will do a Google search for you! Here's how:
There is now a "Google G" button that is a separate button than the Search button even though it looks like it's attached (I didn't design it). Basically, if you click on the G you will get a Google Search of the site, but if you click on the "Search" button you'll get the normal search - HOWEVER - if the regular search comes up empty it will automatically do a Google search for you.
This pops up and then gets an overlay. Here I searched for "D4":
Then this shows up:
So the good news is that you get Google results if you enter something too short for the normal engine. Hooray! Search results in this case are limited to LTG.
How about "70's Guild F50-R" as mentioned in this post which is long enough but might not deliver all the expected results? A search that works will return results as normal, but now there's a Google Search tab on the top of the results:
The Google tab will return Google results and even include the normal Google recommendation of "did you mean:"
Hopefully this is useful. I've looked at Search solutions for far too long and most of them involve installing some specialized database software on the server which I don't really want to do for various reasons. Using Google search has always been "better" but now it's wrapped up into the LTG UI, so it should allow for some more mainstream use.
I should add that as I was going to announce this a few days ago it just stopped working which is part of what led me to restart a bunch of processes, so if you notice any weirdness or it just stops working please let me know.
Enjoy!
