I'm on the hunt for a 12-string to eventually add to the collection. I had originally read on the Guild site that the GAD-G212 Dreadnought 12-string has a nut width of 1-11/16", which would make it fairly uncomfortable for fingerpicking.

But then I saw several posts from owners of the guitar stating that the nut width is actually 1-15/16", a width that would be just fine for finerpicking!

And after that, I saw a listing at Elderly Instruments that says the nut width on the GAD-G212 is actually 1-3/4", which would still be in the realm of fingerpicking acceptability.

Does anyone out there in Guildland actually know the REAL, no kidding, FACTUAL nut width on the GAD-G212? And maybe the string spacing at the saddle? And the rest of the Guild 12-strings?

I'm considering the Guild GAD-F212 (F40 body), Guild GAD-G212 (dreadnought), the Larrivee L-03-12, the Martin J12-15 and J12-16, and the Taylor 355 in my search for a decent fingerpicking, new 12-string under $1,000 USD. Any comments, advice, suggestions? Thanks.

outside nut width 1 7/8
outside E to outside E at the nut 1 5/8 (there is room to go wider with a custom nut)
out side E to outside E at the saddle 2 1/4

I measured a G212 here on the floor.

Thanks, Bing! I suspected it had to be wider then 1-11/16" on a 12-string dread. Heck, my GAD-30 is 1-3/4". That sounds like it would probably be OK for fingerpicking. I occasionally fingerpick my GAD-40C, and that neck really is 1-11/16". I wouldn't want to squeeze 12 strings into that space.

I believe I may look into the GAD-G212 when I get settled. We're moving before too long, finally found a house we like. I think I'll bookmark the Guitars of Montana site. Where I'm moving is pretty middle-of-nowhere, and I don't feel like driving 3 or 4 hours to get to a Guild dealer. Thanks again!

I have played one locally on several occasions, and it felt just a little bit cramped to me. But then again my GAD-50 was cramped to me as well, so I installed a custom saddle with a wider string to string spacing on it, and it is much better now.

Depending on how big your fingers are, it may be okay with you.

I agree with Fstpicker. The GAD 212's I've tried felt cramped, with string-to-string spacing closer than what I'm used to on my G-312. I hadn't looked at the specs to realize the nut may be exactly the same width as the 312 - 1 11/16. Now I'm realizing that a custom-cut nut and matching saddle may satisfy my complaint! And inexpensively, too. I'll follow this one with interest.

Nice discussion, Guys. Thanks!

I have a G212 which I purchased last year. Shortly after buying this guitar, I decided to have a new nut built for it. For Me, the strings were too closely spaced. As far as tonal quality, You would have to spend some serious dollars on another brand, or move up to an F412 or F512 (or one of the Westerly 12 stringers) to better this axe.

Recently My cousin was comparing his Washburn 12 string to My G212, and at first He did not think the extra cost worthwhile. Within 10 minutes of Him playing My G212, I nearly had to pry His fingers open to retreive My 12 string........My answer to His question was, "Uhmmm No, I never lend My guitars to ANYONE!.....Because I've lent out 2, and one came back damaged, and the other disappeared!"
