Hi everybody,

I have a question and maybe there is someone who could delight me.
I have the chance to buy a Guild X-170 in very good condition for a very good price. But this one got chrome hardware, and I've thought that the X-170 only exists with gold hardware. Exists a version of the X-170 with chrome hardware?
The seller told me that the guitar is from the early nineties.
My second question: The guitar comes with a bigsby but the bridge is a "non-bigsby-rosewood-bridge". Are there different versions of the X-170 with different neck angles? Possible problems if I buy a Guild with bigsby on a version with "wrong" neck for a bigsby? Please excuse my bad english.

Greetings from Germany

Hi Peter, can't answer 100%. I have a X-170T made in 2000. It has gold trim, Guild Bigsby, etc. I'm not sure how well a wood bridge will work w/ a vibrato since the strings will be rubbing around in the wood & it has no give. I'm pretty sure the "Bigs" was added after. I don't think the guitars were made w/ a different neck angle for a wood bridge vs. the Aluminum "Bigs" bridge

I wasn't real familar w/ Guilds until around 2000 & only know enough to probably say a few wrong things & get me in trouble. What is the serial #? Find out & post it. It should be stamped on back of headstock & also written on the label inside. Hans Moust will be able to tell you when it was made & if he thinks any may have come w/ chrome hardware, etc.

The only X-170's I've seen come w/ gold hardware. I think you will get your answer & Hans may even be able to help you locate one in Europe, since he is from in the Netherlands.

Hi Peter,

A X170 with chrome hardware is a rare item. I have seen one on ebay and it was described as a special. It may be possible you are actually playing a X160, X161 or X160T and not a X170. The early model X160's were similar to the X170 except the hardware was chrome, the bridge is rosewood and the neck was not bound.

What color is the guitar? X160's tend to be different colors than the X170's. Two of the colors of the X160 is a Cherry Sunburst and a Black. transparent finish. The X170's are Sunburst, Blond or amber, and Orange. There may be other colors but that is what I know of.

The X160 version with a Guild Bigsby was sometime refered to as a X161. I have seen others refer to it as a X160T.

If your guitar is a X170 someone may have changed the hardware when they installed the Bigsby. Verify your model by looking at the name inside the body cavity under the f-hole.

I have owned quite a few X170's and X170T's. I could not detect any difference between neck set between models. I also own a X160 with a Bigsby. All the instruments seem identical to me.

radiocat,

If you don't like the wooden bridge, could you use a metal one?

My ancestors are from Thuringen. I used to leave in Glendale, AZ, and our sister city is Memmingen.

Dear Jake and Mat and also Darryl,
thanks for your fast response and help.

Darryl, I live in Solingen, thats a small town (but also famous for his knifes and swords industry) . This towns nearby cologne.
Thüringen is a few hundred miles away and memmingen is in the south, 600 KM away.

But it seems we are both in the literature business.

Greetings

Peter

GUILD X-170

Hi, I have bought the X-170. The label inside shows

Guild X-170 B-BI
Serial AK 170233

The hardware is chrome. The formerly owner said it were original.
Very nice guitar. Looks like new from shop.

And a there is a question for Hans: The guitar has a rosewood bridge. Does it work well with a bigsby or is it better to buy a bigbsby rocker bridge?

Thanks and greetings

Peter

Hello Peter,

Congratulations with your 'new' Guild X-170. That would be an instrument from 1996. The chrome hardware is kind of unusual but I'm not saying it's not possible. Can you show us a photo?

As far as the Bridge is concerned, I think you would be better of with a 'rocker' bridge. A good quality tune-o-matic would work as well but if you go for the aluminum 'rocker' bridge, make sure you get the one that you need. The 'old' style is compensated for a 'wound' G-string, so if you use a 'plain' G-string, you need to get the 'updated' version.

Good luck!

Ah, Jake, I tell a lie. It's Mobile. I'am not sure I spelled that correctly.
Is it close to B'ham? They are visiting my Aunt and Uncle.
