Long topic that says most of it.

My current computer chair is starting to feel less padded from some significant use. Once issue I have with it is that is has fixed arms. I have to sit far forward to play my guitars. Yes, I have a nice stool for playing while NOT on the computer, but I keep finding myself loading up guitar pro lessons and internet chord charts for songs, so sitting where I can see the screen is a common occurrence. So I've started looking at chairs with arms that fold back, out of the way, or don't have them, or... a chair that has separate arms so I can NOT install them.

I looked up Gamer Chair reviews Office chair reviews to see what was out there. Lots of expensive chairs is what's out there. Who is Herman Miller and why should I pay THAT much for his chairs ?

What have you used and like ?

One suggestion would be to look up executive Office Chairs like you would see in a corporate office setting. Most of those are nicely padded with low or no arms at all but still swivel, tilt, and height adjust. Granted they probably going to be more expensive than a computer chair but they may just be what you are looking for.

Another suggestion is to keep playing on your stool and spend $50 on an Amazon Kindle Fire tablet. That way you can just pull up your chords and stuff on the tablet. This is what I did for learning to play the piano. It was so nice to just set up my cheap little wifi tablet in my music room for quick reference instead of going back into the room with my computer and such. Now I can get my internet music lessons or chords anywhere in the house from the music room to the deck out back.

We have several plank bottom chairs (or something similar) around and that is what I sit in whether I am using a computer or a bass or even both. They have wooden seats but there are any number of seat cushions available if the natural padding is insufficient. Probably cheap too - try a used furniture store and look for orphans from a dining room set. This assumes you need some kind of back rest because a stool is probably as good or better. There is a part of me that wonders if you are overthinking this or whether there is a requirement that is obvious to you but I have not figured out.

I have an office-type chair purchased from Staples that is very comfortable. It has a mesh back, contoured Tempur-pedic seat cushion that provides a very nice ride, numerous adjustments for tilt/height/etc., & adjustable/removable arms (held in place with large-diameter knobs). It has a Tempur-pedic tag on the seat cushion, so that's probably the brand.

edit: Looks like this one, though it was probably on sale when I bought mine:

Don't have a specific brand for you, but I've owned a few office-type chairs with arms that can raised up and out of the way when guitar playing trumps working.

Who is Herman Miller

His company designed modernistic office furniture as far back as I can remember; 1950's and maybe earlier than that. Lots of collectable items from that company are still out there.

I'm sitting on one now, but it is pretty old - 20 years at least. An office chair with all the "controls", padded seat, etc. but no arms. Perfect for office work, or guitar.

No memory of where I got it, though! But I've seen similar chairs at Staples, Target, furniture stores, etc. I'm sure you can find one you will like.

Not that I would buy a chair without trying it first but Amazon has some pretty nice office Chairs for very reasonable with no arms or removable/retractable arms. All the ones I have seen have the tilt/height adjustment just like a regular computer chair. At least by looking on Amazon you can get an idea of who makes what and with what options they come with.

I've been checking out Amazon. Trying before buying would be a plus. We have a Staples and an Office Max near by. I got my current one at Staples I think. If the arms moved out of the way, I would consider buying some foam and just adding some.

+1 on the Soundseat. Ordered mine when I was going through treatment for disc compression in my lower back. Ordered the breakdown model with the higher back &
removeable arms.
