I practice my jazz "repertoire," such as it is, on my X-175 through a Princeton Reverb amp. This morning, though, I drug my Strat out of the closet to play. My wife, a very good pianist, comes into the room. I ask her if she could tell I was playing a different guitar. She said, "yes, and it sounds mellower" ! I should mention that this AVRI '63 Strat has the "Custom Shop" '54 pickups in it instead of the standard ones that came in it. I'm a bit surprised at what my wife heard -- should I be? I drug the Strat out after listening to Ed Bickert playing jazz on a Tele on Youtube. Thoughts?

And then there is the sadly missed Ted Greene:

There was a guy at Jazzguitar.be who went by the handle, Doc Bop, if I remember correctly. He posted some videos of someone he knew who gigged around L.A. playing non-fusion Jazz on a Strat. The guy with the Strat had lovely, lovely tone, along with chops to burn.

A particular guitar can help with what you want to achieve, but the magic is in the brain, ears, and fingers.

One more thing: I always find myself feeling sad when I see this video. Here's a genius of the guitar playing at a wedding with people yakking in the background paying no attention (which of course is normal, it is a wedding reception). Just a lonely genius looking kind of situation.

I can imagine his pain - even though I'm not 1% of his level - but I had that - "Can you play for us?" - and when I started to play - they started the conversation. After that I only played on street without expecting anything - or on a gig - hoping for something . . .

Just unplugged, my Strat infinitely mellower sounding than the S-100 which sounds more acoustic.

The guitar you're playing has an EQ that comes through no matter how you tweak it.

Some guitars are dark. I counter this with smaller strings.

Walk, Don't Run to the computer and buy some GHS Brite Flats for the Strat, she'll really love you then ;]
