Did you recover anything from the Sony's disk?

Agreed! Get one of those external drive cases, pop the old drive in and you have extra storage and your old files to boot..

I'm pretty festidious about backups. The only minor annoyance: I hadn't pulled an MP3 backup in a while. I've got about 4/5ths of more than 6,000 MP3s on Discs. Rather than sorting out what's on the discs and what's not -- and re-encoding with iTunes (which doesn't seem to have a whole lot of competition in MacWorld) -- I downloaded iPodWorks to just copy my iPod onto the new computer.

My Quicken files were backed up, but I'm not putting cold, hard cash ($70) down on Quicken for Mac until there's a version sure to work with Leopard.

I've got all my Finale files backed up but my version of Finale refuses to install on the new machine.

Sorry for the long answer... the short answer is I didn't lose much, but I may not be able to use a lot of it for a while.

Quicken 2007 for Mac works fine with Leopard. I am using it daily. However, there is no easy way to import Quicken for Windows files into Quicken for Mac. It appears that Intuit never thought people might ever switch from one platform to the other.

Your other alternative -- if you have a copy of Windows XP or Vista -- is to use Boot Camp on the iMac and keep using Quicken for Windows.

If you want to run Windows and the Mac interface at the same time, you can get VMWare Fusion or Parallels and run Windows and Quicken for Windows inside the Mac OS. I use Fusion with Windows XP and it works well.

I've been looking into those interface utilities ~ but I'm not quite there yet with just familiarity with OS X. I decided that I would try QuickenOnline, at least temporarily. Intuit is offering a trial month free and if I like it, it's only 3 bucks a month after that. I'm thinking that's less that buying the new upgrade every year and I don't have to worry about backed up files. Plus, no more reconciling registers - it's all done for me. Seems like the simplest solution for now while I get my bearings with the Mac.

Here's a question for you... I don't have a full copy of XP, but I do have an upgrade copy. Probably won't do for Boot Camp, right? I do have a full copy of ME. What's my best bet with what I have?

Crap. Your great suggestion sunk in a little late. I told my repairman he could just keep my laptop to cannibalize. I figured it wouldn't be worth the effort for me to part it out, but now I would love to have that hard drive back. I might call him back.

Upgrade copy would work, it would just ask you for ME. You might have to call MS to activate XP, but the retail versions are transferable to another computer, IIRC.

Dear Lord, I wouldn't use ME for anything that required the internet. Even with a fire wall and AV, your time of non-infection would be measured in minutes.

I was able to get XP installed on Boot Camp even though it was an upgrade version. I had to have an external CD drive attached so that the upgrade program could search for a disc for an earlier version of Windows. I installed XP from the external drive and when prompted, ejected the XP disc, put the earlier version in for it to check, then I put the XP disc back in and finished the installation.

You need the external drive because the Mac CD/DVD drive gives you no way to eject the CD during the installation process. Let me know if you need any help.
