Thanks for this Toni. It's all too easy to forget the real reason for Memorial Day amidst the barbecues and libation.

Yes, THANK YOU for this, Toni. Here in Vegas, it's one of the BIGGEST holidays. All the hotels are full and I'm heading off to work to deal with all the partiers and people here to celebrate. But let's not forget exactly what we're celebrating. Your ability and right to come here and overindulge and act a fool is only made possible by those who have laid down their lives for your freedom. Lest they forget (which they do). I am humbled by their sacrifice. Tom in Vegas

America.....land of the free because of the brave. This weekend in some way try to extol the bravery of those 16 million Americans who were called to arms, the 1 million casualties, and the 576,000 dead. They were all brave men, and they went without a whimper.

I had the good fortune a few years back to spend a Memorial day with these two characters; on the left is Buck Gibson GM3 and L.D. (Loel Dene) Cox S2. They are both survivors of the USS Indianapolis tragedy. Buck passed away September 29, 2008. L.D. still grows pecans on his ranch in Comanche, Texas.
