I just noticed that the cabinets for my 98RT and 100-J looked to be about the same size. So out came the tape measure and sure enough, they are identical. In addition, the two chassis are identical in size and even have the same mounting holes so they can be interchanged between cabinets. The only difference is that the chassis are punched for different controls. If I swapped cabs, I would end up with the 15" speaker version of the 98RT and a 99-J. Clever modular design on Guild's part.

Do they have double layer face plates? If so - there might be more holes in chassis underneath the actual face-plate.

No. It's just a folded metal chassis that has been chrome plated and silk screened. Just like old Ampegs and tweed Fenders.

They bought the chassis from Ampeg from about 1957 or so, until the Thunder series. From 1956 back, I have no idea.
