Hi Hans - I am looking to buy a Guild classical guitar. There are currently three Mark II's on eBay, but except for one of them, the serial numbers don't make any sense (going by the Guild web site serial number info). Can you shed any light on these?

Here's one I am bidding on currently - according to the Guild serial number it is a 1967, not a 1968 as the seller claims, but at least the serial number makes sense.

These two, the serial number doesn't make sense to me.

question part 2...

And...is it a good guess to assume the CB in the serial number stands for Charlie Byrd?

Thanks, walrus

Hello Walrus,

The first one is from 1968. The last number for 1967 was CB-1173 and this one is CB-1755, which makes it indeed a guitar from 1968.

The other ones have higher numbers and they are from 1969 and 1970 respectively. These numbers are not on the 'official' Guild serial number lists, since they are from the period that Guild already had problems 'keeping track' of their serial numbers. These problems were the reason they switched to a different serial number system during the year 1970. By now I have enough serial numbers in my database to enable me to make an 'educated guess' when specific guitars from this 'problem period' were made.

And...is it a good guess to assume the CB in the serial number stands for Charlie Byrd?

That's great! I would never have thought of that, but I'm afraid it's a coincidence.
The serial number prefix for the Mark guitars all started with a C for Classic, followed by A, B, C, D, E, F for the Mark I, II, III , IV, V and VI respectively.

Good luck with the auction!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
