:D Crusin' thru some craigslists the other day found one that was a little old but fired off an e mail, expecting a sorry its gone. This was a brand new D4...I mean the case was pristine as was the guitar....The guy got it new 14 years ago for his wife, who never learned to play it, and its spent most of its life in its case...Seriously. He had a few calls on it and one guy showed up but said he didn't like its tone!!! Isn't that wonderful.....probably 14 year old strings don't bring out the best in this thing..His wife will meet me in a designated spot in 2 weeks for the deal. (of a lifetime  :D :D :D ) Folks this thing probably still has the fingerprints from Westerly still on it. Did I say deal of a lifetime.....find a way....God provides, this can't be a tease. I got some replacement hours for a friend who is out of town, its delivering pizza. It will give me enough to pay for this in the 2nd week from now.... are you ready.......are you sitting down.... this is with a Guild case of 1994 as well, dark blue plush, latches front and back.... still sitting down.....$425. Total. I feel almost sheepish, but paying the full asking price I'll get over it. I feel like I've won a lottery. Wonder what this thing will sing like with new strings, and maybe a new comp. saddle. I'm just a smilin'! This was advertised for 3 weeks for $425 including hard case. Why it didn't sell? Who knows but this is one I'm jumpin' on. sight unseen...who wouldn't....I may have a sweet D25 white, for sale in the near future. Don't know yet, but this D4 is going to be well loved. one of the last of the legends...how about that! I'm envious of myself, at this point. Had to share this with the group. :D :D :D Steffan

Hi Steffan; if you have them in P-bucket, look for the 'IMG' address; copy it and paste in directly into your draft post. When it comes in, it will be preceded and followed by . If so, when you 'Preview', you should see the pic.

Hello taabru45,

Nice find! That guitar was finished somewhere in the middle of 1993.

But why is this posting in the Archtops/Hollowbodies section?

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Late night, not paying attention, excited, old, hungry, low blood sugar, socks too tight, hey its an almost unplayed D4 from 1973 with hardshell case, I'm allowed to be 'somewhere else' in my head....trying to figure how many hubcaps I have to steal to get this paid for, remember me, the guy that recently got the white Corona D25 that is so nice.... Damn....If I don't pay the hydro soon, I won't be able to seek out these finds, and I'm expecting my Standel SG 410, as in 4 10 inch speakers (Standel-Gibson) amp to arrive next week. Help......I'm out of control, out of food, out of milk and bread too....But boy can I distract myself now! :D Steffan

A real beaut there Steffan...that mahogany looks brand spanken new! Great find!
Hey 12 er eh! My brother lives in Richmond Hill, and I'm hoping to journey there in the spring, me and my little old Toyota Motorhome. Maybe our Guilds should meet, I may have my 512 with me. You aren't allowed to kill members of this forum in the hopes of acquiring their instruments. Clear?! 8) Maybe a Graham stop would be in order too. I want to Gypsy and play for the summer. Hope I can pull it off. Steffan

I picked up a DV4 this week from Ron's Guitars in Groton, CT - just down the road from the old Westerly factory.

Having recently moved, I've been in the process of (willingly) downsizing/simplifying just about everything in my life, including my guitar collection. Having just sold my F30r-ls, my F44 is now the sole headliner and i was looking for quality "backup" when the DV4 just sort of appeared in front of me. I've had it for few days now and I'm really in love with it - great, balanced mahogany dread tone (and not just "for the the price").

I am once a very happy owner of two Westerly Guilds!

Gotta love those D4's. Just took the DV4 into guitar class this morning...my dear friend Nichelle turned to me after we had played the Costello song Brilliant Mistake (yes I bellowed the lead...) and asked: "Which Guild is that? And how many do you have now?" "Um...this one is the DV4 I bought at the Garage Sale a couple of years ago." "Hmm..." She looked my guitar up and down. "Well then," she asked..."what was the one you brought in last week?" "That was the D25 I got six weeks ago," I replied. "Hmm...well, then, what's the one that has the pretty inlays and everything?" she asked. "Ah," I replied..."that's the GAD50...that's the new one from China with the rosewood back...so I have three, now." "Wow," she said. "You know, they all sound really, really, good. This one sounds woodier or something. I remember that new rosewood one is really really crisp sounding! And the dark, winey one sounds dark...and rich!" "Why do you like Guild guitars so much?"

"Just what you said, honey!" Then I started playing Needle and the Damage done. Nuff said.

Nice Steffan........ a D-4 is (fairly) definitely my next acoustic.

Now, pardon my veering......... somewhere I noticed a post of yours wherein you say you knew Lonnie Johnson.

I really REALLY need to know more about that please !

Hi Coastie, I had a thread a while ago, ever encounter greatness without realizing it. Here is hot it starts.

Sometimes, crazy happens. example. In Toronto in the golden folk era, late 60s, late nite, coffee house, mike was open. This old black guy, salt and pepper hair, gets up and plays a couple of numbers, I'm hearing a couple Django type riffs, and after go up and compliment the guy. He says something like 'thanks, ....I was pretty good when I was younger." He said if i wanted to I could go to 'Sam the Record mans store, and they might have something. I asked him his name. Lonnie Johnson, he replied. I picked up an album at Sams. Was shocked of course! Lonnie Johnson!!! Played with Duke Ellington for about 12 years, and Louis Armstrong for about 15. Pretty good..my my....the guy is a Legend. He was hit buy a car, and died in the hospital a while later..after hearing about that I would visit him. What a beautiful, humble, loving, giving and totally great man and musician I had the privlige of meeting. I remember him saying 'if the music is in you, you can make music with anything', any instrument, then mentioned something about someone playing music through a hose, with trumpet mouthpiece in it. Wow, Thanks for that one. Sure wish I'd thought to bring him a guitar in the hospital....I guess greatness, is all around us, Maybe some of us are more than a legend in our own mind, or not. Steffan

Coastie that was at a time when folk was every where, I was maybe 20. Odetta playing on a small stage in a coffee house, with her B I G voice, Sonny and Brownie, One time Josh Whites' bass players' cigarette burned a hole in my jacket sleve used to brag about that one....man, That was a page out of history. Such fine people, and it wasn't hard to say hi, or talk to them....At that time the real pros, knew who paid for their groceries. Example...two weeks after Odetta finished her gig, every one, on staff got a personal postcard from Odetta thanking them for being so nice and thoughtful for her....now thats class... It was also a time of breaking the segregation situation. I heard that Muddy Waters was blown away when he played a quite big place in Toronto, usually bands played there...and the audience was mostly white.
Lonnie was just the sweetest guy! The real piss off was, at the time he was working as a janitor.....imagine !!!
