Our Hawaiian band, the Stowaways in Paradise lost our Hawaiian slide guitar player of many years over Memorial Day weekend. He was much more than a bandmate. He was a close friend and mentor, a marvelous player and teacher and I will miss him dearly. He had a great sense of humor and I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. He was also a better guitar player than me, and yet he never made a comment at rehearsals or at gigs that wasn't totally supportive.

He loved music in all its forms. He loved to play it and to share it. He was also a walking music history encyclopedia and a bottomless well of music trivia. Here is a very nice article by Scott Nygaard in Acoustic Guitar Magazine remembering Jack:

Any Northwesterners who were here in the late 60s might remember Fat Jack:
Fat Jack [1966-1968]

If you moved here after that you would likely have heard at least one of the many other bands he has been a part of since. He'd been at the center of the bluegrass community here for many years in Sockeye, Southfork, the Shoreline Ramblers and many others.

His last gig was a huge Beatles sing-along at the Northwest Folklife Festival on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. This year the crowd was huge and they sang along with great gusto! Jack enjoyed himself immensely but was very tired afterwards and went right home. He passed later that night in his sleep.

May he rest in peace.

I was wondering just a while back what had happened to Jack and now, with this sad news, I know.
I remember walking on State Street in Bellingham in 1978 (or so) and hearing the best bluegrass coming from down the street. I picked up the pace and walked into Buck's Tavern to discover Southfork, one of the best-ever bluegrass bands in the Northwest.
Jack, Cliff Perry, and other bandmates made Southfork a staple around Bellingham for years. I had occasion to enjoy Jack and Cliff as a duo in smaller, more intimate sessions and I always marveled at Jack's talent.

Another good one's gone on to a new gig. Sorry for your loss. :(

My sympathies. Sounds like he was a great guy!

I read the Fat Jack story; what a fascinating one it was! Looks like they had a pretty good run, be it only a 2 year one.

I guess in the long run our memories are all we get to call our own, sorry to hear about Jack. All the more reason to create more memories for ourselves....more Guildfests, with more Guilders.. looking forward to meeting you Joe. Glad Jacks is still being appreciated. Steffan

Sorry to hear that AJ :( Band relationships are special like no other. I lost a dear former bandmate and friend late last year under very tragic circumstances. He was so young and talented, and we were all shocked. I hope there is a lot of support for family and friends.

All my best,
JP
