hi guys,

I just signed up to find out some info on the 1950's Guild X175 and X150 guitars with the white Franz pickups. I've read a bunch of the threads here and there look to be lots of passionate and informed players here. I'm a blues player who typically enjoys getting around on a thicker feeling neck with a 1-11/16" nut width. I've been searching for details on the X175 and X150 necks and some reports say they have a 1-11/16" nut width and medium size neck, and other references say they are very narrow and skinny.

I also just picked up Hans' wonderful book and don't remember seeing any details like this, but I may have missed it.

What can the experts here say about the neck size/shape? Was there a "typical" neck size/shape for different years of production? For example, can you say that the necks from '54-55 were bigger than later years?

And aside from the usual archop issues (neck set, straight neck, etc), and binding/inlay issues, what is there to look out for on the '50's Guild archtops.

cheers,
Sean

I have a 1959 X175, and two 62's - and all of them have a skinnier nut width than typical Gibsons of the era. Not mandolin-cramped, but still, I wouldn't call them wide.

The '59 has a very round, biggish, wonderful neck, both 62's have thinner neck profiles. Still, I wouldn't compare them to late 60's Gibsons, those are smaller.

hi Walter,

Many thanks for the reply (you too danerectal).

Is the difference between your 59 and 62 necks typical of those years? Do the ones earlier than that ('54-56, etc) have a typical profile as well?

BTW, I used to own a 1959 Guild CE-100DP Capri that was a fine guitar but the neck was pretty narrow and slim.

Thank you!
