I have a 86’ Guild D-25 and I keep hearing that somewhere in the guitar is a date stamp (at the neck block) but I don’t seem to have one on mine. Is there anywhere else they could’ve stamped the date inside? Perhaps it left the factory without a date stamp?

It is possible that there is no date stamp in your guitar or that it is hard to read. When there is one it is usually stamped on one of the beveled edges of the neckblock (most often the treble side) and you should be able to see it through the soundhole. It can be hard to read especially when the mahogany block is darker than usual, so a little flashlight might help.

Sincerely,

I also have an ‘86 D25 that appears to have no date stamp on the inside. Looked with a flashlight and a telescopic mirror. Possible there is one on the bracing that I can’t see.

An old post, but, were you able to find a stamp? Just acquired an '85 D-25, and mine has two date stamps. One is the exact location Hans mentions, treble side beveled edge on neck block. It is a little faint and you have to shine the light a certain way to see it clearly. The other is on the underside of the top, on a thin piece of wood that circles the soundhole. If you put a small mirror just under the area where the pickguard is, you can see it.

I was out-of touch in June last year, but I seem to recall s many reports of no stamp in '80's guitars that I thought they dropped the practice, and thought they brought it back with the neckblock stamp in the early '90's.

Now I see Hans says it is possible some didn't get stamped, although now I also wonder if perhaps they were using an ink at the time that faded more quickly as well.

Now Jfilm reports one with two stamps. Yep, that's our Guild.

Maybe they realized they missed one and figured they'd just catch up on the next one.

What’s peculiar is my D-4 has one on the neck block but my 86’ doesn’t have one on the neck block but I have no idea if there’s one somewhere else on the guitar. My 74’ D-35 doesn’t have a date stamp that I could find but given the very faded
“D-35” stamp on the block I wouldn’t be shocked if it had a date stamp that faded away almost entirely

It’s not a big deal for me because the way I understand it the date stamp wasn’t actually a date of completion for the entire guitar.

Well, my D-25 was not fitted with a neck at the factory, and yet it still has the two date stamps- It also has a very faint D-25 stamp on the neck block. I posted recently about all this, but my guitar was pieced together from parts salvaged from the Westerly factory when it closed.

Right, it was put there when the rim was completed. Actual completion of guitar was anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months later.

Ah, right, I remember that now. Makes sense since neck block was part of the original D25 rim. What nut width did that G45 neck turn out to have?

It's 1 11/16". Enjoying the D25 sound, breaking it in since it was never used- it's extremely bright and lively. I'm guessing he put it together recently and didn't play it much if at all. Neck profile is fuller than I normally like but I'm getting used to it. Very different sound from my D40, I really like it.

My '81 D-46 has three date stamps, all within a 5-day time frame: neck block (Dec 8 1980), top brace flanking sound hole (Dec 5 1980), and back brace (Dec 9 1980; deep in the lower bout).
