I'm one of the new guys here, and although I've seen this practice for years at photography websites, I still don't understand why many people list their gear at the bottom of their posts. There, it is cameras, lenses, and other bits of stuff, and here (as well as other guitar sites) it is of course guitars, and other stringed instruments.
I don't understand the need to do this, and wondered what the rationale is.
Please and thanks,

I also list guitars (Guilds only) I used to own. Why? If someone has a question about a particular model, you can see who has/had one. And, of course, it is a bit of "showing off", sharing our "stable" with others who love Guilds in particular, and other models, too.

Lastly, it's just fun!

And keep in mind some of our members have so many Guilds, they don't even list them!

There are many here (the members who have the best collections, usually) who list no guitars and others list five or six when they might have twenty.
If someone ask a tough question about a Guild or any guitar brand, the answer is, most likely, here because of personal experience with that guitar.
May not list because their guitar list changes so, rapidly. Or think some might view them as boasting.

I do not list gone guitars that are not Guild. Guess I started listing them while most others were doing so.

BUT - I'm member on finnish Apple-computer forum - and most folks there list their Apple gear - I list my audio gear including guitars and recording consoles and tape machines 😂 - Why? Just because the list of computers would be freaking boring 🐾

Just showing off, I guess. 😐
I see you have an Epiphone . I too have one. It was the first acoustic I bought (1972). It's a FT-155. I liked it because it didn't have the bolt on neck as most Epiphone had at the time. It has a wood burned pattern on the back and sides.

It sparks conversations - what do you think of X? Does your X? etc.

There is an element of bragging or showing off.

There are solutions to the size issue when including the list as a sig but they do require some work. That said, if my sig ever got long enough to generate complaints, I'd just stop listing.

Thanks all for the replies.
Interesting to see the reasons for the lists.
Years ago I asked this same question at a photo website, and got a wide range of answers, similar to those in the replies here.
Except for bragging, which none mentioned. And when I suggested that it might actually be the reason for the lists, I was branded a troll and burned in effigy.
While I don't see a need to list one's gear, I appreciate people's honesty in admitting that vanity plays a part for some in doing so.

Another side benefit of listing mine, which had not occurred to me, was that people have seen what I am interested in and have contacted me about selling one of theirs or buying one of mine.

Many of the guitars I have purchased have come from forum members here or elsewhere. So letting others see what you have and are interested in can help find potential future gear deals.

I have no doubt others have in the past experienced the same thing.
