Thanks all for the replies.
Interesting to see the reasons for the lists.
Years ago I asked this same question at a photo website, and got a wide range of answers, similar to those in the replies here.
Except for bragging, which none mentioned. And when I suggested that it might actually be the reason for the lists, I was branded a troll and burned in effigy.
While I don't see a need to list one's gear, I appreciate people's honesty in admitting that vanity plays a part for some in doing so.

I also list guitars (Guilds only) I used to own. Why? If someone has a question about a particular model, you can see who has/had one. And, of course, it is a bit of "showing off", sharing our "stable" with others who love Guilds in particular, and other models, too.

Lastly, it's just fun!

And keep in mind some of our members have so many Guilds, they don't even list them!

This is precisely why I do it,

Obviously this is just video of the Gibson crowd marching on my house when I dared to say on their site that the Hummingbird, Dove and especially the J200 were garrish and tastelessly decorated enough to belong to the Madam of a New Orleans Whorehouse.
Apparently, they didn't like that.

Well, I can understand why. It’s one thing to say you don’t care for something, it’s not your style, you would prefer it if it didn’t have this or that, etc. However, there are many people who appreciate those guitars and consider those appointments as attractive and iconic. Harsh comments like yours could easily be misconstrued by someone you don’t know as insulting, even if meant to be funny.

I often find myself doing the same thing because I really don’t know the people on the receiving end of a post, like I would if saying the same thing to people I do know well.

I had a Hummingbird once, gifted it to a friend who had no acoustic. It was really nice for a while. I wanted a Dove for a bit too but they are out of my price range. If I wanted a Jumbo, meaning, if my right shoulder could handle it, I would vie for a Guild F50. Those are the tops, imho.

I also do not list all the acoustics I have ever owned as that would fill me with regret often, looking over my list, as some of those I wish I had never let go. Oh, the humanity! The 2 in my list are the only guitars I own at this time. Probably be this way for years to come, as any Guild funds will be allocated elsewhere.

Oh, I did buy a pack of strings though. Might totally start to list all the guitar strings I like...

I do not know how to make a list here.
Click on your LTG callsign at upper right of website page. Click on Signature. Then list all your guitars and click Done or Save. It's really in the signature where we are listing all of our Guild and other mfg related gear.

oh man, that is hillarious! even though i greatly admire the 3 Gibsons u refer too. I wouldn't say those are overboard at all- closer to perfectly appointed imho. Gibson certianly has other, much plainer looking guitars, and more blinged out ones as well. I don't mind a little humor on the forum, plus it tells us a little bit about yourself and where you've been haaa...but everyone has a different personality.

as for listing guitars in the sig, I never though I was anywhere good enough a player to own, speak of, or advertise ownership, of even a fraction of my stash...but as time went on at LTG, I started to enjoy more and more reading everyone else's list of Guilds. for a lot of reasons really...quite fascinating! At some point I realized not everyone here is a professional player, and never saw any disrespect dealt out to anyone for being proud of their Guild(s), regardless of skill, talent, or time spent playing. So it seemed appropriate to contribute my share, in my own way. I own the models listed, in one form(s) or another. Priors and for sales are not included in my list.

I am on a Sprinter van forum and it definitely helps when people list their van, year, model, variant, etc...some guys go really crazy like including this type of cabinet or that type of water tank and solar panel...just loading the signature with every tiny detail. i think it is best to list which exact Sprinter you have, but the rest is too much!

I do miss Richard's list. At one time and another, he would list them all. It's quite spectacular.
Awagner also has a great list of Guilds.
TX did too...

Mavuser,
Glad you were amused. While the message was accurate in that I really do find those Gibsons to look extremely and overly ornamental to the point of looking trashy, my wording was deliberately snarky because of sentiments expressed by some of the Gibson zealots who inhabit the site.
In a discussion about brand preference, I made the point that most people who have a preference will claim that the brand of whatever that they like was the best. One of the members replied that yes, while that was true that everyone would express that sentiment, when it came to guitars only those who liked Gibsons were actually correct. The rest of us were somehow delusional, and sadly, just wrong.
Another even went so far as to say, and this is a quote, " Anyone can own a Martin, but it takes a special person to own a Gibson" (!!!!).
And finally, after another exchange with a member that he didn't like, I was told that I wasn't "invited to the party", (as if membership and the right to opinions and comments there were by invitation only) so apparently I had no right to comment, let alone disagree with the prevailing party line regarding Gibson guitars.

I imagine my lack of tact explains why the Canadian government has never seen fit to award me an Ambassadorship.

As to your comment about your musicianship versus the quality of your instruments, of the five guitars I currently own, three (including the Guild) are far and away above my pay grade, but I'm not sorry I have them, as I appreciate the quality of the sounds they produce, despite my inability to maximumize them, so I say to you, don't sweat that.
