I’ve started on a new build, a flamenco commission. Here’s a few progress shots of the rosette coming together.

That's lovely, Chris. What wood(s) are you using for that wonderful rosette? I'm guessing that's ebony between the pieces, right? No guess on the pieces themselves...

Yes, little ebony matchsticks. The tiles themselves are Buckeye burl. I have enough for quite a few guitars, so I guess that’s a trademark now. (Plus it’s a really nice look!)

Another day, another tweak to the layout (plus some more thinning of the top). Always easier to make changes now then when you’ve got some wood glued on.

Oh! Those two little lower bout braces look interesting! I have seen similar on flamenco guitars but never knew why they are necessary there, especially when shaved very thin they seem to have "almost" no support function. Very cool.

Ralf, since the goal is a very sharp, focused sound without a lot of sustain, they are supposed to help control the sound, with interfering with the, as Somogyi would say, cross-dipole movement that is desired for flamenco guitars. (Basically, the center is able to move in multiple directions.)
And even though they may be shaved thin, they can still provide quite a bit of cross grain support. When I built my classical, I used open harmonic bars to extend braces under and through them, opening up the top half of the soundboard. What Jeffrey Elliott discovered is that strips as low as 0.5mm tall in those open areas provided a lot of strength against through cracks which can be common in that design. I wouldn’t go that low with these, since they are also acting as stop bars.

What makes flamencos louder than classicals? Seems like the flamencos have a more powerful attack!
When I was a classical guitarist, could never get as loud as I wanted. Then I got a Ramirez FL1(?) flamenco and it was much louder/crisper attack! So nice!

I love your use of specialized woodworking hand tools, and admire the skill with which you use them. (y)
