Since my father passed I’ve been working my way through his CDs while I’m driving. (After all, he was the one who got me into jazz, playing it since I was born.)
Yesterday’s driving music was a CD of early Stan Kenton from the 40s. Still very swing band based, I love the driving rhythm guitar in this one. (Bob Ahern is listed as the guitarist.) Nothing swings harder than a good guitar and bass working perfectly together.

This second track was a revelation. I’m not much into vocal jazz, but this performance is too powerful to ignore. The vocalist, June Christy, was just 21 at the time and delivers a performance that is comparable to Billie Holiday, a decade before Lady Day’s recording of the song.

So, no Guilds, but recordings worth listening to.
