Closest I ever came to a bear was one day about 12 miles from the trail head. We were below a ridge bushwhacking to a pond on the map. You could see a faint herd trail heading that way which we picked up to make the going a bit easier. Well we saw a large steaming pile of scat dead center.

We did a 180, (actually a 243), and got up on that ridge as fast as we could and headed to a lean to a few miles away for the night.

The sound of a squirrel or chipmunk outside your tent can sound like a train....I have NO desire to ever meet a bear.
