I just bought this Guild D-120 Westerly dreadnaught. It was bought for someone else, but I'm having fun playing it for a week or so.

It's a truly great guitar, and all solid wood. I've been playing for over 50 years and this guitar is as good sounding as the best I've played. Why I'm not sure, as it cost me just under $1,000Australian. I'm currently selling all my guitars, because I'm moving onto a different kind of instrument, but I'm still in possession of my Gibson J45 and in a direct comparison between my Gibson and the Guild I'd choose this specific Guild D-120 any day. It just sounds so alive and responsive.

My last 4 guitars have been all mahogany guitars, one of them a Martin 00015S. I'm now a 100% convert to guitars made of all mahogany. For "my" playing purposes a mahogany top just sounds much better than a spruce or cedar top. Over the past 2 years I've played over 50 or so all mahogany guitars, and I have yet to play one that disappointed me with the tone.

I'm using the D-120 for fingerpicking, and boy is it loud and responsive to all fingerpicking approaches ...... alternating bass style, arpeggio fingerpicking, monotonic bass style, single string runs. I almost can't believe that I got a brand new guitar this good for such a reasonable price.

If all Guild D-120s are this good sounding then I'd certainly recommend them.

EDIT: The Guild "hard" foam case it comes in is a fantastic alternative to the more usual type of hard case. It's solid and sturdy and is also extremely light. It's the first time I've had a case like this. I much prefer this type of hard case to the heavier wood type hard cases.

I agree. I have one of these myself. It's a fantastic guitar in all ways. It has a softer sound than my D25 and is just great for many of the songs I play. I've been really impressed with it. I've had it for around 6 months or maybe a little more and I like it more each time I play it.

Thanks guys. I'll do a recording of it sometime over the next day or so, and post a link to it.

Nice guitar! I have the previous version, the D-125, which should be largely similar. I think it's great. It's the one I almost always use when playing out . . . rich, creamy tone, controlled dynamics and oodles of sustain. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine!

I've also owned a couple of similar (not identical) fabric covered rigid polyfoam cases. They were light and protective. They don't show every ding and scrape from handling either. I prefer hard-shell (molded plastic or plywood) cases, but I can't give a good reason why. A case like you have actually seems to work better for most jobs.

Yeah, I was a big fan of the D-125 a few years back. Glad you're enjoying yours, Jimbo, and welcome to LTG!

Good sound and great playing! As for the comparison, I too had a D125 and I personally like the D120 slightly better though they are similar. The wider nut on the D120 suits me better and the tone seems a little better on the D120. But again, it's all personal preference. I sold the D125 once I bought the D120.
