So, back in early 2020 I bought a minty 1995 DV 52 on Reverb at a pretty fair price. The seller was a newbie and I might add a great guy and he did a nice job packing the guitar. But alas, it still arrived damaged. The entire bottom of the guitar on either side of the 1/4" input jack was cracked and cracked badly. It was gaping actually.

I contacted the buyer and he apologized up and down (although he did everything pretty right) and said return it for a full refund including 2 way shipping. In the meantime Reverb got ahold of me and asked what it would take for me to keep the guitar. I told them I wouldn't want to pay more than $265 for it with the crack. They said well, o.k. then it's yours for $265 and sent me a credit immediately. I never really thought they'd go for that but they did and were positively wonderful about the whole thing.

After looking at it on my wall for a bit I decided to send it to Tom Jacobs to repair the crack and also to have some fun with it. Now trust me on this, I really don't have much of an ego. I mean there's not much I do very well so it's easy for me not to have one. But, I've always wanted my own guitar with my name on it. So, I asked Tom to put my name in inlays on the fingerboard. We discussed that and concluded it could for sure be done but if I ever wanted to move it I'd need to find someone named Rich or who just didn't care. So, we decided to put it on the PG in Abalone. I told him to do whatever he thought best.

I love the entire DV series but always had a real fondness for the DV 52. It reminds me a lot about one of my all-time favorite Guild models, the D 50. Here's a few pics of the finished product. I wouldn't mind a few more nice ones getting damaged in shipment if I can get them for that kinda price.

That inlay is cool and it goes with the abalone rosette really well. Nice!

That is super cool Richard! Yeah Reverb brings a touch of class to the process when they need to.
You’ve gotta keep that bad boy! It has your name on it!

And nice looking repair. Especially if it was gaping. Love the ebony fb on that model.

I remember that story and what a deal it ended up being. They did a nice repair job (TJ??) and I'm sure it sounds great!! Good move on the name on the pickguard vs. the fretboard. If you sold it someone could replace the PG, unless their name is Rich, of course. I think it looks great. What a cool guitar to have some fun with!!! (y)

Very cool Rich, that looks great. Is the abalone inlaid? Tom did a great job.

Veer: I am a retired high school teacher and John Rich is one of my former students. He graduated from Dickson County High School in 1992 and was there for his Senior year only. Sooo talented - even then.

Wow, that's a good price, considering that the "damage" affects nothing and is easily repaired and is hardly noticeable. I sold a DV-52 for $700 on Ebay.

D**mn Richard, I might have to buy that off of you! I've owned a DV-52, early on in my Guild "career," and I must say it was just as good sounding as a D-50 or even a DV-72, IMHO.
