Had to Google John Stewart. Folkie - Kingston Trio circa 1961 and beyond. Now I know why I didn't know

Fro,

He was one of those singer-songwriters who never got very popular. Although he wrote some hits for other people, he had only one on his own, and even then it sounded more like Buckingham Nicks because they played and sang on it and were very high in the mix.

Nanci played a Guild extensively in the late 80s, can find youTubes of her with it. Funny thing is that if you look at the liner notes of her newest album that she plays Taylor guitars exclusively or some such business, but on the album cover she is playing a Martin D-18!
Pros move around a lot when it comes to guitars, even Emmylou tends towards a Martin when playing without a band. Possible exceptions are Richie Havens, never seen him without a Guild, and Dave Rawlings (1935 Epiphone Olympic) and Gillian Welch (Gibson J-50), though she had one of the archback all mahogany D25s early in her career, before it was stolen.

Harmony H-173 bought in 1960 (retired), Alvarez AC60S 2008, Eastman AC320ce 2009 "Hybrid", Guild D25M 1974, Martin Grand J35E 2009, Martin D12-20 1970, Martin OM-21 2009, Martin 00-15M Custom (full body gloss, wide neck) 2011, Voyage-air VAOM-06 2010

She has had a number of Martins over the years, see thread on the topic

For one performance with her OM-42 (or is it a custom OM-45 as has been suggested?), she was always big on bling and showmanship as well as talent
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFDk3U9oGq0 Brady Blades does a great job here as well, and her cover of this really helped Gillian and Dave

She is one of the main reason I started getting serious about guitar again about 4 years ago. She does such a great job on covers and introducing singer/songwriters that are relatively obscure at the time she first sang their material, think TVZ, Gillian Welch, David Olney. I play a bunch of the songs she covered as well as some of her own material. For a diehard fan I strongly recommend the 4 CD + short DVD set "Songbird", it essentially spans her whole career through the early part of this century. I got mine as a gift shortly after it came out, I thought it was awfully expensive at the time ~$70, but necessary. I see that it is now selling for ~$150 new on Amazon, you should be able to find a used one by hunting for half that. You won't regret it. Never seen her personally, keep hoping she would come to a smaller venue somewhere nearby. She played in KC a few years ago at an outdoor venue, tickets were not outrageous for GA (but were outrageous for decent seating), but I don't like to singers at 0.5 mile distances.

Just picked up a copy of ELH "At the Ryman" and in the liner notes she tells the story of a well used Martin that a singer/songwriter friend gave to her. It has a cigarette burn on it. Posted this on the UMGF to see if anyone could amplify the story, but so far nada. At any rate another ELH Martin..........
