Yeh I guess I'm referring to the "enjoyment" or "fun" playing. Generally, I am more task or purpose-based. Writing songs, recording, rehearsal for a show, shows themselves, etc. I suppose I have never "practiced" per se o_O

A few times a week, I'll play for several hours at a time - a few short breaks in there, of course. Otherwise, at least an hour a day if I can. It is my hobby, my stress relief, my enjoyment. It keeps me sane.

Sounds like it is working for three out of four ;-)

What’s odd when I read these threads is that people play guitar for more than 20-30 minutes at a time! I rarely play longer than that, never have.
Do you mean "continuously" or at least with only very short breaks, between tunes?

These days, I need to take a break and stretch a little at least after about that long, myself. But yeah, depending on "the mission", will do it several (3-4) times especially if polishing/finalizing a piece or refreshing something I've gotten rusty on.

Yeh it was more of a comment about how I've often seen these threads and realize that many players sit down and play guitar for multiple hours at a time. The realization that I'm the odd duck ha.

As in: I never practice guitar playing with that explicit purpose. If I were to say, learn a song (which is pretty rare for me) I would probably spend maybe 10-15 minutes doing that. Then possibly go back to later that night, next day, etc.

Writing songs would be a bit of a stop-start situation ... grabbing guitar, working it out, grabbing pen/paper, recording bits. Getting it down enough, then going back again later etc.

Recording sessions would be until I get the take. Could be 10 mins, could be 2 hrs. But it would involve lots of stops-starts.

Preparing for a live show- would run through the set (which would typically be 30-40 mins for the groups I've been in) 3-4 times over ... maybe a 3 hr session. For me, the singing part would be where I focus- usually the guitar playing is set to where I don't really think about it. Practicing the vocal projection is more challenging, especially live.

Then this bring us to- simply playing for the sake of picking up a guitar and playing. This is where I do this most days (sometimes skipping a day or two, occasionally a whole week or two if I'm not feeling it)- and these "sessions" would typically be just like reading a book or something- kind of sitting down, relaxing- running through my usual riffs or older songs, revisiting things, humming a melody, walking around the kitchen pretending I'm PF Sloan (yep) ... ha ... this is where I would say my usual is around 20-30 mins at a time.

Maybe it was because I never played dreads until I was in my sixties, that I'm able to today. I had a ten year stint of tendonitis that has all but disappeared, and play dreads 90% of the time pain free. But eventually I'll be playing an 0 18NY or some such.

Copy all that, except these days I do the "just to play" less frequently but longer, usually about an hour, but that could also include "rehearsal" for stuff I'm planning on recording.

Joined the club, too. D-50 is getting down time, and looks like a bridge regluing. The F-30CE is seeing all the action. My shoulder LOVES me for it. Getting old sucks. NOT getting old sucks worse.

I hear so much praise for the F-30’s so it’s not like it’s a downgrade. Just a different set up and presumably different sound. No reason to further tear up your body trying to play a dreadnaught.

Oh, I agree! My F-30 does not feel like a downgrade to me - I love it! Technically, it would be considered a downgrade from my previous D64 - bling-wise, cost-wise, etc. But I can play it all day, so it's an upgrade!

I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks all the time. Trying to get better is the driving force for me, on two different instruments. In fact, when a scale or arpeggio is learned on mandolin, I tend to learn it on guitar too. Stagnation is well, stagnation.

I play in two different performing groups.
One is my wife and myself. The other is a Folk/Bluegrass Band.
Our shows very in length from 45 minutes to 2 1/2 hours.
I to practice a good hour or more at least 4 or 5 times a week, plus attend band practice once a week for 3 hours.
I hope to be able to continue this pace for at lease several more years as I am about to turn 70 in November.
