Is This A Guild Thing?

I was about to write a thread asking whether there was something odd with my new GAD jumbo because the top appears to be so thick around the sound hole, about 3/16" thick...

Then, when I was trying to measure it by holding it inside the sound hole, I realized it was some sort of reinforcement around the hole. When my finger slipped farther inside, it went off the edge and I realized the top probably isn't any thicker than any other guitar I have.

Is this reinforcement around the hole a Guild thing or something just on jumbo bodies... or what?

Thanks...

I think not just a Guild thing or a jumbo thing. My CV-2C has soundhole reinforcement also and I know that the Irish Lowdens and McIlroys have it also.

People keep pointing out various things about the GAD series and I keep saying, "So...?" I guess I don't care if it was made in China or the sound hole is reinforced, or it has a poly finish instead of lacquer, or whatever else it may be. The damn things are great value and as much as I'd like to buy American, it's what I can afford.

I know what you mean. I've got a GAD 50 and the soundhole's reinforced.

It sounds PHENOMENAL! the local guitar shop guy thinks it's a real gun, a great guitar. . . even though a small bug inside me wishes for a $1,800 D-55 or something. . . but the larger good guy inside says, "hell, it works, it sounds good; just keep it, play it, it's a great guitar."

I'm kind of immune to the China Syndrome argument. I think many years ago, at the time free trade was put in place with China, despite its egregious religious oppression and human rights record, well, I think it was then that American elites tossed away the whole cookie.

Was it Bush or Clinton that did this? (Look forward to the next Olympics and the rights scandals that will be "discovered").

Amen to that! I can't put down my new GAD 50. I am amazed at the quality of construction and the sound. Am I still looking and saving for the Westerly D-25 (a '74, please Lord...) and dreaming of the Westerly D-55? For sure. But the guitar in hand right now beats those two in the bush. Um...for now.

Dennis,

I've seen many guitars with a reinforcement plate under the soundboard in the direction of the bridge. Does yours completely encircle the soundboard? That would be unusual, I thinik.
