I’m selling a set of 30th anniversary Lindy Fralin Vintage Hot pickups on CL. I’ve never done this before. I had someone respond and ask if I was the original owner which I am. Didn’t hear back all day so I emailed asking if they were still interested. Got this response. I just assume everything is a scam as my daughter got got last year( for my money)

I've gotten this one before, back when I was selling an electric 8 string (lol). Craigslist is a mixed bag. Lots of scams and lots of seedy happenings, but it's also where I found my Guild!

It is absolutely a scam. Someone tried this on me too, but I didn't bite.

The check will be worthless, but you won't find that out until weeks after you've cashed it and sent the merchandise, the the bank will come calling, and guess who is responsible?

I would ask him to send the cashier's check (maybe to your work address so he doesn't get your home address) and if he sends it, turn it directly over to the suthorities. Maybe they are stupid enough to be easily traced.

Ask your bank how it is a scam. They have likely seen it hundreds of times. Most likely an easy Google search also. Off the top of my head what comes to mind:
1. They want your personal information that they will sell. It also identifies you as a good prospect for scams.
2. The check/mo “clears” and your bank places funds in your account, but then there some kind of problem later and it is reversed. I think there are several ways that can happen for up to like a month perhaps.
3. They ask you to return the $100 holding premium when they pick up the item, and then the check is reversed. Double scam.

You guys are the best. Can’t say the same for the a**hole scammer. If they would only use their intelligence for good, not evil.........

The one that tried to scam me said "I'm out of town and my assistant mistakenly made out the check for $500 more than the purchase price, please just go ahead and cash it then send the $500 back to me..."

A quick rule of thumb when looking for scams is to look for a conversion of money from one form to another. Sending a check, returning the item and then asking for your check or a certified check or money order for the refund is probably suspicious unless your bank tells you that the original check has cleared and that, no matter what happens next, your bank will not debit your account. Sending a check or MO for too much and asking for a refund is a conversion. Requesting payment in gift cards is another conversion. But the key thing is that you receive cash in one form and then are somehow manipulated into sending cash in another form.

whenever you post anything of value on CL, this is typically one of the first responses you will receive. Usually within 2 hours of the post. It is a total scam, and I have seen 4-5 versions of this same email over the years.

Is Craigslist still alive? I know it’s pretty dead where I live.

where I live it's pretty much dead to me as there is never any Guild acoustics on it :)
All I see is two listings for a Squier strat starter pack thing that someone thinks they’re going to get $600 for. And a Seagull 12’er along with some cheapies. So yea pretty much graveyard dead here.

Craigslist is still the first place I go to sell without fees. I guess I could look closer at facebook too.

I've had pretty good luck selling household goods & vehicles on Craigslist. Only rare scamming-type replies, and they are easy enough to delete without giving any response.
