Never noticed the binding around the sound hole on the Orpheum.

I've owned a fair number of "high end" guitars and never really noticed that on any of them....not that I'm all that observant!

Any idea what it is?

It's just marquetry, which is inlaid work made from small pieces of variously colored wood or other materials, used chiefly for the decoration of furniture and also musical instruments. Herringbone is a type of marquetry. They just got a little fancy with the Orpheums. But if you're talking about the binding, yes the soundhole is bound on those. Higher end details. Very nice. Kinda like you'll see bound F-holes on some nicer Archtops.

Yes sir, the sound hole binding. I was taking pix to send off to the Buyer and that is when I noticed that.

As my wife says, I have a firm grasp of the obvious Sherlock!

So you're selling your Orpheum? And wait, the Orpheum in your signature is a 12-string. This guitar is a 6 string.... i'm confused.

Of course!! What a dumba$$ I am!! They made so few of these guitars but they made 12 (strings) and 12 (fretters). I wonder if they made a 12/12..... I don't think they did. But someone will correct me. Thanks for the virtual SLAP!! (y)

Interesting. I've had or played many high end guitars, including some luthier or small shop models (my Pawless, for example), and don't recall ever seeing a bound soundhole. I do have bound f-holes on my AA, but not the X-170. FWIW, I'm the impending owner, can't wait, should be a nice upside to self-quarantining.

Yeah, the bound soundhole is a nice touch in the Orpheums. My 12-string has that too. Might be unique in the acoustic line for Guild. I have seen this on other guitars though. It's a really subtle touch. Good catch, beecee.

Yeah, for some reason I thought I'd remembered someone here with a 12/12 and forgot about chazmo's one. Two slaps in a day...... wow. I feel better now.

I have to admit that I did not see the binding at all even looking your pic . My eyes went to the inlay ring. Lol I just opened mine up and I was looking at the ring decided to turn cell phone light on so I could it better as it's dark in my house and then I noticed the white around the sound hole. Lmao
I do however like the rope border on Rosetta just seen that as well. Lol

Yeah, the 12-strings are all slotheads too, I think. I.e, 12-frets to the body, and slotheads.

As for the 6-strings, I believe they made a 12-fret slothead for one of the models, but I'm not sure which or if they were 14-fret slotheads...

No slaps for Tom. I know he likes it too much. :) :)

If It is the Orpheum I am thinking of Brad, I was the original owner and purchased the guitar new. That little 12 fret hog is one sweet guitar and was my Favorite for fingerpicking. I just couldn't justify keeping it when I already had an Orpheum Jumbo that I am still madly in love with to this day. I really Hope you enjoy it for a long time to come!

Just a note, Most if not All of the Orpheum models came with Bound soundholes as a standard feature. The Slothead 12 fret models both 6 and 12 strings were specific to the 000 body style with a vintage "V" shaped neck profile and a pointed neck heel. The 12 fret slope had a solid traditional style headstock with a "D" shaped neck profile and a rounded neck heel.
