Went to a local open mic and a guy has a beautiful old F 512. Just lovely. Afterword, I went over to him and said nice guitar, 512? I thought I'd give him a little opening to brag on it. His reply? I don't know, but it's old.

Hard to believe that, but I've run into this a few times lately. Obsessive guitar geekdom is not universal.

The reverse is also true. There's a young guy at my country club who's like part of the club family. He played golf with his dad, then was on his high school golf team, went to college on a golf scholarship and is now in his mid twenties, working a full time job and still plays at the club. I've known him since he was a teenager and had no idea that he played guitar. We were having a beer and a stogie after a round one day and he says what he really wants is a vintage Guild. You could have knocked off my socks. When I told him about my 74 he was very impressed. Who Knew?

Truer words were never spoken! Went to brunch last Sunday (when the drunk string changing happened) and found out that my niece's new boyfriend plays guitar! I was asking him questions about playing and he was saying how it's hard with the kids and school and work to find the time. I asked him what kind of guitar he had, and he said, "I dunno.... Alvarez maybe?"

I mean, I can see not being a total geek and maybe not dorking out over guitar minutiae, but not knowing the name on the headstock? That is amazing to me! :stupid:

Me, too! Even guitar brands and styles I've never owned or played interest me. I need to know about guitars!

I guess I am a member of obsessive guitar geekdom like the rest of us...

But it IS potentially maritally dangerous and financially draining, as a quick peek at many of our signatures attests.

And what happens when that possibly-oblivious F-512 player starts suffering from some degree of geekdom and realizes that there's nowhere to go but down from where he is?

Yes, when Guild addiction sets in, hitting rock bottom's only a matter of time.
A short time.

If a person has a bleh-guitar I can understand not knowing the brand ... but a Guild ... an old 512? :hororr:

The guy is good enough he plays cafe gigs. The case is old enough and beat up enough to indicate a very early 512. Make no mistake, he knows he has a fine 12 string, and that it's a Guild.
