With the recent passing of Jay Black (Jay And The Americans) I came across an old photo of the band. In the photo is Marty Kupersmith holding what appears to be a Guild guitar. I've searched trying to ID the guitar but
don't find an exact match. My limited knowledge makes me think it the elusive Starfire VII but the toggle isn't in the right place. I thought that surely someone here would know what I'm looking at. Thanks.

Hello Mike,

Welcome! Yup, that's a Custom 7 - Deep Starfire. With a laminated maple top, just like the prototype, it's different from most of the other later ones.

Sincerely,

Oh, that's cool! Never seen one of those guitars actually being (I assume) played!

Leisure suits and Afros? That style is as never-ending as their lapels.

What's with the no fret markers on the F-50?

Welcome to LTG, Mike. Nice introduction post. That is a sweet-looking axe! Good job identifying a rare Guild Starfire guitar.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.
When I see a pic like that, instead of asking who is the guy holding the guitar, I'm more likely to ask what guitar is that guy holding. Seems like I've found like minded folks here.;-)

Back to the guitar.
The earliest Custom 7s would have the toggle on the upper bout?
In total there were only 7 of these made?
Do we know if this particular guitar still exists?

I can recognize a Guild headstock when I see one but I've learned more about Guild guitars, since finding this forum, than I ever knew before. I appreciate you all being here.

All so far collected info is in the link in my post #5 which I will edit soon to add this "new found" Custom 7. So we (except Hans) didn't know that guitar yet, hence we also don't know its current whereabouts. Good starting point would be to search Facebook and Instagram pictures of Marty and any bands he played in and see if there are other pictures of his Guilds.

I updated my older post here to include the new info, I hope I have not too many errors in it, so feel free to correct me.

Marty Kupersmith does have a presence on both FB and IG but since I don't, I can't get too far there.
I do find it interesting that the two pics (in this thread) we have of Marty both show somewhat rare Guild guitars. That just makes me wonder if there was something special about his relationship with Guild...or maybe with his local Guild dealer.
I'll keep digging.
