I believe most states provide for that, although that can be modified in the will itself.

But I assume Glenn‘s post contemplated inheriting guitars, and not the headache of administering Richard’s estate, albeit for some compensation.

Maybe Richard can just adopt Glenn instead.

I think Glenn likely has more gear than I do so he may need to adopt me.

I'm getting serious about wills and executors etc. I don't have many close friends so that's a tough one for me as far as finding somebody I trust to handle everything. There's actually a few folks on this forum (although I think I've only met 2 of you) that I trust more than anybody local I know. Wish someone like that lived somewhat nearby. I'd gladly give him/her a guitar or 2 of his/her choice (along with a fair cash payment to take care of selling off all my gear and getting the remaining cash back to my estate.
