Went into Gryphon Stringed Instruments yesterday, and they still have the F 30 hanging on the wall. This is a sweet sounding and good playing guitar, at half the price of guitars that were really to me no better. It held its own with some boutique, and admittedly beautiful, guitars. Close your eyes though, and it held its own. Very clean for it's age. I can't believe it's still there.

I'm going to have to go bug my luthier about getting my D 35 back. Same basic neck shape I believe. Four months and counting, but he did say he had 160 guitars to work on, and he said he needed to feel on top of his game to do a Guild neck reset.

I'd bust a gut if I hadn't bought a Martin 00 15 custom in the mean time.

Someone here needs that F 30.

Guilds have gotten a reputation, over the years, for being a pain in the hoohah (deserved or not) to reset the neck. He's probably dreading it and bumping it for easier jobs.

The F30-12 I once had was a Canon, and was very balanced and articulate. I played it once each week at church with two guys that played and swore by Taylor 12's, and in my opinion my Guild was significantly better than their Taylor's.

I think you mean a JF-30-12, right, guildman? The F-30 is a very different beast, and it's not a jumbo shape.

Overprice by eBay standards, or that Craigslist posting, but by major urban finest acoustic store ever? I think not. Buy with confidence. The extra depth on this one really makes for a deeper rich sound.

I played on a 1971 D 18 in another store this week that had just had a neck reset. 1971 is no big deal and it was $2700, so you might say overpriced, but my God, the tone! Blew the new fancy boutique dreads away.

Oh I imagine "significantly" would be an understatement.

Not a totally outrageous price from a reputable retailer. Maybe a little high for a Westerly, just because so many were made, but for one in absolutely primo condition, maybe...

I'd have to have it in my hands and play it, and fall for it bad, to part with that kind of cash. And be prepared to own it for a while, because you are going to have a hard time getting a full return on your investment.

I'd have to echo Neal here. I love the Gryphon store, but I would make an offer for them to consider. But only if I was just mad for the tone.

I've never lost a dime buying and selling my Guilds because I don't pay over market.

I've never bought a guitar while at the same time thinking of selling it. If I have that thought, I pass on the guitar. It's not the one for me.
