A 97 B4CE.

I've never played a bass. I've picked one or two up but have never thumped more than 2 notes.

Seen a lot of great posts about the B4CE.

Of course they're not perfect but seem compelling and it will fit in my little room...plus it was reasonably priced and looked great in the pix.

I can't read music.

Luckily the room is far enough away and sound insulated enough where I can get in some practice without harming the dog's or cat's ears.

Guess I'll be watching some Marty Music over the coming weeks....

Pix when I get it!

Playing bass is very rewarding. It's melody and rhythm rolled into one.

I'd probably put flats on it, tame the ring and zing of roundwounds, on an acoustic bass it is pretty gnarly.

Cool. All my negative comments about a B4CE are specific to its acoustic only performance. I have several basses so I can complain, but if I could only have two it would be the Starfire then a B4CE. Have fun.

Yeah your comments were pretty positive save for the volume from "x" feet away which won't be an issue for me for a bit!. You made it sound very versatile.

It's melody and rhythm rolled into one.

I can't play a lick of lead but for some reason I'm pretty optimistic I can find my way around a bass.

I played bassoon and baritone in Jr High and HS, again not being able to read...so I must have some deep down love for it.

Congrats on the new purchase, beecee.

Your comment re: enjoying low-down sounds made me think of one of my Boston-area favorites from long ago. Mark Sandman played a two-string bass guitar, accompanied by a baritone sax in this clip of one of his bands (he also fronted Treat Her Right). Rather good-quality video for so long ago:

I have private fun with fretless B30 - but only when there's nobody within listening distance 😏

Bass is quite different from playing lead. While both might be playing single notes, bass usually is playing a pattern. The trick is to be able to play the pattern in time! Some people are even able to master the pattern which then allows them to sing over them!

Like this guy:

And you don't need to read music, there is a ton of bass "TAB" on the net. (Most of them are wrong in spots but enough to get you going!)

Always liked the studio version of this song.

My wife doesn't care for it at all..says it's dark.

Understood!

The more I've been thinking about it, most of the time when there is a song in my head the "back beat" for lack of better terminology is typically what is pronounced. Not something I'd play on a guitar.

Funny, what if I turn out to be a natural at this due to the wiring in my brain and realize I've "wasted" 45 years trying to get the sound in my head to a guitar!!!

Well, get ready for the onslaught of questions!!!

Ok, so he is playing alone...Maybe a bad example but if he was playing along with a guitar would he be playing that "detailed" riff?

Yes, that is the Bass line as recorded by the Animals.

(By the way just out full disclosure, that's me. I added the chords since I was playing it solo!)

Congrats. I like mine a lot. If it has an original, thin-line-ish kind of case, you are in good shape.
My case is very deep and it probably contributed to the neck cracking. Here, go back to this thread, look at the pics of my bass sitting in a really deep case and you'll probably see what happened.....

But in any case congratulations on your purchase. Here is the link to potential problems with storing the bass in the wrong-sized case:

Impressive!!

And new terminology...Bass Line....I feel like such a newbie!

Gilded,

I saw that a few days ago while I was researching the guitar prior to pulling the trigger...thanks!

Here's Doyle Dykes, accompanied by Dave Pomeroy playing an acoustic bass (maybe similar to what you just purchased?):

If this is during the New Hartford years I'd guess a B-54, which was NH's acoustic bass. A little too big, IMO to be B4.

It has a round sound hole, too. I know my b4ce has an oval sound hole, right, Gents? Maybe the B4 has the same set up?

This thread was the final point that got me into fixing my B30SB pup-system - it was defective from day one - now it works - should I start a new thread or just have a slight veer here?
