So, recently I upgraded to Widows 10 and honestly, I like it a lot. But when I did that I lost all volume on my laptop so now I can't listen to any UTubes, Video's etc.

I've messed around and punched a few buttons here and there but alas, to no avail. Can anybody out there walk a techno dinosaur thru the steps to get my volume back???

Thanks in advance,

Richard

Richard, I just typed "upgraded to Windows 10 no sound" and before I had finished typing Wi..... the whole phrase came up. There's a bunch of hits and they'll walk you through step by step!! It's something to do with the drivers or something..... do a Google search!! :encouragement:

Or, just follow this link and see what you think. Seems pretty step by step: https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/fix-windows-10-no-sound-issue/

If you "upgraded" to Windows 10 less than 30 days ago, you can roll back the installation. If not, you're pretty much on your own. It could be that there's no output device chosen in the sound control panel, so you might want to check there too.

Or, just get a Mac!

I was trying not to be the smart aleck on this one. Thanks for taking the bullet, Sandy.
A$$holes... y'all are SO silly... I actually wish I had a Mac.... or ... What do we call them these days? Cuz soon I have to replace my $hit... and it's gotta be easy or I'll just turn into an old alcoholic nerd who plays his guitar badly and whines all the time. Oh .... wait. Never mind.

Just remember, if you try to go back to your previous Windows level, you will probably lose everything on your computer, including Windows. Ask me how I know...

You actually don't on a Win10 rollback, but it has do be within the MS decreed 30 days. It will take you back to your previous version of Windows with all your files intact. In Richard's case, hopefully that's Win7, the last good OS MS made IMHO.

i beg to differ, but this very thing happened to me. I upgraded and hated it. Things wouldn't work correctly so I called MS. They said that my computer is too old to run Windows 10 so I needed to buy a new computer or revert to the old version I had. I followed the instructions to go back and when it went to restart it locked up and everything was lost, and I mean everything. I lost every file I had, pics, documents, everything. Yes, I should have backed it up but the ads said " if you don't like it just go back to what you had", so well, I lost everything. A work friend had a Windows 7 disc so that I could re-install that. I called MS again and their answer was that I should buy a new computer that could run Win 10. If they weren't so damned expensive I would definitely buy a Mac. I could buy a very nice guitar for the price of a Mac. Oh, and it was about 3 days after installing 10 that I tried to revert.

Very sorry to hear that. I have done at least a dozen successful rollbacks from coworkers or friends that have all installed win10 unintentionally (MS makes that very easy), and all have gone seamlessly. Admittedly this was on hardware that was probably newer than yours. Normally, when your computer doesn't meet the system requirements, it won't install in the first place. Not knowing what you have, it's hard to make a call on that.

I always wind up being the exception to the rule it seems. I'm not a computer whiz but I'm not a total luddite either. Probably somewhere in the middle. Savvy enough to get myself into trouble but not knowledgeable enough to fix it. The worst part of the whole thing, besides losing all of my files, was MS's infuriating attitude. I had an even worse experience (attitude wise), with Apple and I-tunes. Customer service is a forgotten concept.

Richard, did you try the link above? Did it work? It's really easy. Delete a driver. Reboot, windows finds a new one. You're back in business. Did you TRY IT??

And, I haven't been through any of that hell that K.O.M.A. has, but I've done a system restore as little as three weeks ago. When I installed a new version of AusLogics Speed Boost.... which used to work really well, but the new version screwed up my computer so bad NOTHING would work. So I did a restore back to the time before I upgraded. I got my old version of it back AND everything started working again. But even if ALL that fails, I have my whole computer backed up on an external drive using a Seagate Backup program. And even if that fails my internet provider has a Cloud drive that has ALL my files backed up on it. So even if I had to start from scratch... all my beloved stuff would still be here. I don't rely on technology. I rely on me being a tad anal....... :stupid:

It works for me.....

Oh, Richard... I feel for you. Installing Windows on older hardware is a lesson in futility.

The original problem sounds like a "device driver" issue. I worked in the business for many years, and everything you need to do stems out of what used to be the Windows control panel. I don't know if that still exists. If the instructions that folks dug up for you aren't getting you anywhere, you might call up BestBuy's Geek Squad for on-site help.

FWIW I upgraded to Windows 10 on a six year old laptop and had no problems :) In fact, in some cases the system runs better than it did before. I also use Vi for text editing because emacs is too bloated to be useful.

Fro, from one vi lover to another. Dude, follow Sandy's advice and get a Mac. :)

vi runs natively on OSX's terminal shell, as do most Unix commands. I even do native builds of my software on it!

If Windows doesn't have the correct driver, it will most likely just reboot up and use the same one that doesn't work. Which is why if you delete the current driver (that doesn't work) then reboot, Windows will not find the driver and go looking for it and will either grab a different one or go looking for the one that will work. It's worked for me before. Just follow those instructions I linked to above and see if that doesn't work. THEN, if things are still wonky you can continue to find a solution but I bet it will work!!
