How many coats?

StewMac’s latest how-to videos are a collaboration with a couple of Florida builders on doing spray finishes using canned lacquer. In it, they recommend 14 coats of clear coat. For those of us who love the thin nitro finishes on vintage guitars (and understand that they’re not as protective as those from, say, the 90s), does anyone know, FROM ACTUAL EXPERIENCE OR KNOWLEDGE (not just guessing!), how many coats Guild used in their Hoboken finishes?

I can't help you with the Hoboken stuff because I wasn't there, but I can confirm that it will take that much from a rattle can as you can't spread nearly as much as fast from a can as from a real spray rig. My experience between cans & bulk is about 3 or 4 to 1 can/bulk.
