I'm struggling to believe this stuff is real -- are these guitars actual "mods" people have done to them? They look like "guitars" that should be in a satirical art installation. Granted, I did some horrible things to guitars in my late teens, early twenties -- but nothing like these! I'm beginning to think GAD should ban gruesome, horror pics like this on LTG.😧

I'm going to love this thread ;[]

I had a Duo Sonic (went to Germany years ago) that was so routed out the neck pocket was just barely hanging on.

SG's with huge center routes, SG with both pickups moved towards the center...

You don't see too many expensive guitars like Les Paul Customs with hack mods like these, usually reserved for cheaper instruments.

Slightly unrelated but I picked up a moped from a pawnshop once where a guy had wrapped the suspension and other parts in duct tape, and then slathered epoxy over the duct tape, and in the process dripped epoxy all over the tank, fenders, speedometer, etc...

My only question is what kind of drugs cause this, with meth being pretty "high" on my radar for these unexplainable occurrences.

Is there a reason for routing out a guitar? What is it supposed to do?
Solid body guitars like SG's and certain Les Pauls can be pretty heavy. Jeff Beck once said he gave up Les Pauls for Stratocasters because Stratocasters are lighter, even though they're also solid bodies.

Another reason is that certain build eras of some guitars like Les Pauls and Bluesbirds which have a "cap" or separate top, are "chambered" underneath the top, to improve the resonance and sustain of the instrument, so sometimes the routing is done to enlarge the chambers.

Some years back I posted this picture of my Huss & Dalton on the H&D forum - I pretended I'd stuck a SJ-200 type pick-guard on the guitar and was so happy with the way it followed the shape of the guitar.

You could almost hear the gasps!

It's not glued on, I wouldn't think of doing it.
