It seems clear to me that there is a significant loss of tone with any reduction in gauge. I'm just trying to find the strings that would give me the least intolerable tone. 10s seem like too much of a sacrifice to me, but may be there are some that I could stand.

I'm using the JP 11's on my JF-30 & they have plenty of tone/character.

A note of caution...I tried DR strings once after reading about their manufacturing techniques. Didn't hold a tune worth beans & didn't have nearly the depth as JP's or even D'Addario's.
