The price of a GTO 389/4sp now...

I had a bunch of Pontiacs, Tempest, Le Mans, Star Chief, but no GTO, even then a little too rich for my blood.

In about 1978, when I was the FNG at AAMCO Transmissions, this guy says "Hey do you want to check out a GTO in a friend of mine's backyard?

So we go over there, and here is this Metallic Green '68 GTO, 4speed, missing a radiator and both inner door panels, the car was 100% straight and clean, $400.

I passed.

Another one that got away was a '62 Impala SS, two tone White/Bronze, rare power windows, 409 Dual Quad, 4sp with a blown differential - the second or third blown differential - the same guy at AAMCO found that deal for me too, and the guy was willing to trade straight across for my daily driver, a '67 Rambler Ambassador 4 door - two tone brown with darker brown roof, 6 cylinder/Auto, abandoned at AAMCO by someone who couldn't afford the transmission rebuild - and I passed on that deal too. Why give up a nice quiet reliable daily driver for a car with a blown rear end?

This was my first, a green 1960 Peugeot 403:

Drum brakes on all wheels tended to lock up on first hit when really cold out, threw me in the windshield a couple times, other than that it ran great!
Bought for 500 francs (no Euros yet in 1980) which was about $100 at the time, at the shop of the village where my grandma had her house.
No keys, just a on/off switch under the steering wheel, and a pull button to start. Anyone who could open the door could run away with it (I guess nobody ever wanted to.... lmao)

The seats in those Peugeots were always so comfortable to me. They felt like a cloud! The French know about comfort. Just look at the Citroen.....

This the most comfortable vehicle I ever traveled in (Citroen DS):

The combination of top notch upholstery with hydraulic suspension made it so that you never ever felt even the worst bump on the road.
An absolutely magical experience.

Interstates were designed to drive 70 safely with 50's technology cars.

Of course, "safely" had a different meaning then.

Scary is driving a pre-interstate Parkway that was designed for 30's cars and a 40 speed limit today.

I'll call out Wilbur-Cross in CT but it is only one of several that have raised white knuckles while driving.

For reasons I still don't understand, I once took the Merritt Parkway to visit my sister in West Hartford, CT, instead of my usual run up I-84. Operative word is "once" - never did it again. Vestigial shoulders, and on-ramps with really short acceleration lanes made for a pucker-inducing drive. I bailed before it turned into Wilbur Cross.

Any Los Angeles peoples here? I remember the first time I turned on the 10 (Santa Monica Freeway) until it went into and past the downtown LA exchange and became the old Pasadena freeway...... OH MY GOD!! The first actual freeway built in Los Angeles and to say it was curvey and hilley is an understatement!! Narrow lanes and shocking curves and hills with blind on and off ramps!! You have NO IDEA!! Shocking!! And at rush hour with people from LA and downtown rushing to get home in the burbs (Pasadena, Altadena, all the denas.....) that CLOGGED that freeway and made it a HORROR!! Maybe someone remembers?? What a nightmare, and it's still the same, I'd imagine..... wow!!

Back then a blind curve and then an off ramp that was like 3 car-lengths to a DEAD STOP!! And on ramps were the same, just a quick right turn and you had 3 car lengths to get to speed which when it was busy could be insane or just maybe stopped and just TRY to get in..... good luck.

The Hutch is an awesome high speed drive in a good car at about 3 AM, with nobody else around.....and hopefully no deer. It gets a little straighter once you're in CT.
