Hello, again, I come to ask for help IDing this Guitbox. This belongs to my friend, who maintains that he bought it in college around 1970, and that it's a Guild of some sort. I maintain that he's mistaken, but I wasn't around in 1970. He actually says that the guitar was sold as a brand that was a subsidiary of Guild, sort of the way DeArmond was. Alas, there's no info inside, not even a serial number that I can see. The guitar is a virtual twin of my 1974 Kay KDG60 classical, right down to the very similar headstock inlay and tieblock inlay. My Kay was built in Japan, and the Guild-ish one could well have come from the same factory. Does anyone remember a Guild label that might have had this guitar built and imported?

There are bigger versions of these on my flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/15294943@N03/

Thanks so much for any help you can offer; I'm hoping to buy a Guild soon so that I can hang out here and do something other than beg for help. :)

Hello Bill,

1970 was probably too early but around 1973 Guild started importing a line of guitars from Japan under the Madeira brand. This could have been one of those!

Sincerely,

Excellent Hans! Thanks so much for the help- I hoped you might happen along. I'll call my friend, and see if Madeira rings a bell. 1973 might be about right...

Thanks again.

Madeira is the winner, thanks, guys. My buddy didn't even have to think about it- I said "Madeira", he went "Yeah, that's it alright". Guy at the guitar shop told me that he's seen a few Madeiras, none of which had any kind of discernible markings other than the label, which in this case is missing. Thanks again!
