So how different are they?

the Artist Award, which seems to not have changed throughout it's production life and was an option on other models. I've only seen it in photos of custom F-50s and F-612s.....has anyone ever seen it attached to any other models
Well, it was not used for the F-612 but there were several other models that had the 'Artist Award' style headstock, like the George Barnes A/E model and the Deep Starfire VII/Custom 7.
Made a quick shot of two headstocks from the same period; an M-85 and the 'Artist Award' style headstock of a Deep Starfire VII/ Custom 7.
At a glance they may look similar but they are actually quite different. If you want to know how different they really are, here are some measurements ( ....but then again my girlfriend says that we guys worry too much about size).
M-85 measurements first, Starfire VII second:
Total lenth: 20,8 cm vs. 22 cm.
Width at the top part: 10,5 cm vs. 11,2 cm.
Width at the lower part: 8,2 cm vs. 8,4 cm.
Width at the waist is about the same, which means the Starfire VII is a little more 'flared'; more graceful if you will.
I don't recall any mention about the bass headstock redesign from the Starfires to the M-75s in your book.
Guild designs and shapes changed all the time as you may have noticed. As far as the headstocks are concerned, those changed gradually as well. Some changes were a little more apparent, others can only be detected by getting out the callipers. For the book I limited myself to the 'overall' shape; basically just the change from 'center dip' to 'center raised' style but there were many more changes. The 'volute' was one of the other obvious changes but to document them all in the book would have taken up too much space.
Sincerely,
