The parts that came together in 1867 were separate once-colonies called Upper Canada (Ontario), Lower Canada (Quebec), Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Together, they became Canada, although officially it was still called British North America, to distinguish it from the other part. British Columbia joined in 1871, after being promised a railway from the east. The prairie provinces came along in 1905, and Newfoundland in 1949.

July 1 was Confederation Day for years after the original colonies came together in 1867, then changed to Dominion Day when Canada shed the last legal ties to the British government in 1931 or so and became a "dominion" (from [I think?] Ecclesiastes "and he shall have dominion . . . ", and then changed to Canada Day in 1983 when we wrote our own Constitution and Charter of Rights and Freedoms to replace the, guess what, "British North America" Act of 1867.

So Happy Confederation/Dominion/Canada Day, dear Canada.

Yes, thanks for the explanation, John, and a happy belated C/D/C Day to all Canadians!

Question: I assume the manifestation of that railroad deal you refer to became the subject of that great Lightfoot song - Canadian Railroad Trilogy? - Which brings to mind all of the great singer-songwriters that have hailed from up there. We're all thankful for their contributions.

I did a 2 1/2 hour show last Canada Day, hauled in a bunch of friends, we sang all sorts of tunes by modern Canadian songwriters - Ian Tyson, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Stan Rogers, Buffy Ste. Marie, and some others who are well known up here but haven't yet caught internationally (and we hadn't really gone very deep). Must be the long winter nights.

a warm friendly and polite invitation to everybody on this board for a week long visit . . . perhaps John Kidders spread in Ashcroft. Wouldn't that be a party?!
Name the week - anytime other than Labour Day (around 30 other musicians gang up here around then) or the weekend of July 12 - local working cowboy competition. Other than that, I'd be just delighted.

Canada is ....even bigger than Texas.
Actually, just little old British Columbia all by itself is bigger than Texas. Canada is mostly, as my old man used to say, miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles.

Brings to mind the song by Murray McLaughlan, about driving across Ontario: "..rocks and trees...trees and rocks..."

You have me thinking John, and that's not an easy thing nor a good thing at times.

What it the best time, in your opinion, to visit the area?

Ashcroft is inland and somewhat southern BC. I'm ignorant of the weather patterns there so is a Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter thing the best?

If we plan this out maybe we could have a get together in '10 or '11?

If you provide the location we could all chip in for everything else.

Just a thought at this time, much like Arlington was in '07.
