Had to leave Facebooks, just like I had to leave Twitter. LTG is my last social resting place...

And do not get me wrong, I do not hate Facebook. It totally has a purpose. Not sure about Twitter.
That being said, I just have gotten so discouraged by the posts on FB, the news I see, and it just turns me into a monster.
SO, finally, after 12 years, I am in the process of Deleting my account, first downloading photos/videos so I have them to share with kids when I am older.

Again, not a FB hater, just seeking peace. I believe this move gets me closer. I was not really helping anyone on there anyhow.

I totally get it. I take extended breaks from FB and find it refreshing. You could do a lot worse than LTG for a place to hang out. :)

How people behave on facebook is an entirely different topic than Facebook itself. I've ended up blocking almost everyone I know on FB and now pretty much only see hobby-related posts.

That’s a good point, GAD. I really only use Facebook to keep up with the music that’s playing at several local venues. Although, that’s been on hiatus since the lockdown.

About the beginning of the month I realized that Facebook had become a time sink and a source of stress. The later is my own fault because I keep thinking I can fix stupid. So I decided to log in exactly once a day (as opposed to several times a day. Don't use it on a phone and logging in and out of sites is an old security habit) and not respond to anything. I would read posts, follow links, but I would not Comment nor React. I have more time and I am more relaxed. I note with amusement that no one seems to have noticed. I'll probably relax the non-participation but for the most part what I am interested is hobbies, events that I don't hear about otherwise and the occasional witty remark from a friend.

I divorced facefook soon after the last presidential election. And it wasn't simple; I had to jump through a bunch of hoops.

Don't get me wrong; I love a good argument! But quite frankly, there are way too many stupid people on fb and I'm not going to deal with them. I can have intelligent arguments elsewhere that don't result in name calling, cursing, etc.

I am so thankful to LTG members and administrators for maintaining healthy discussions here, and for keeping it all about guitars and music and stuff.

Especially lately with politics because I have masses of friends, the old equestrian kind, and they're nice and I'd like to keep in touch but with them expressing themselves politically at least 20 times a day and all of them at once (and I'm in agreement with them!!) and they'd go from one 30 day snooze to another and as soon as they'd come back online to me, snooze again. Then COVID-19 and related stuff. I found myself logging in, trying to catch up, getting upset with people, losing my $hit and then logging out. Now, i go once a day and even then I find myself just logging off immediately. I hardly ever post any more. So now i don't read newspapers, I don't watch news of any kind, I'm not on FB but for a few moments and I'm fine with that. Instagram is pointless because it's the same $hit as Facebook. So I'm fairly uninformed and calm about it and that's good.

I think lately there are multiple BIG TICKET irritants fighting for attention, and maybe one day, I'll come back and enjoy it again. But for now, it's best if I just leave it alone. Better......

Pre-pandemic , the vast majority of local gigging musicians announced upcoming gigs on FB.
If you wanted to see who's playing where, not sure there's any place else to look anymore.
The countless living-room / empty venue gigs on FB over the past few months have just pretty much
reinforced the situation. I'm on FB, but mostly steer clear of situations not at least
tangentially related to music, but there are a few.

I just use it as a way to keep in contact with, and keep up with Friends. I just ignore everything else. It serves a purpose for me albeit quite limited.

thanks for weighing in friends. it took about an hour to download all my photos/videos from 2009 I had posted up there, 7 GB of data yeesh. So I have them stored in a secure place for posterity :).

Then I went thru with the deletion, which takes 30 days to happen. That is crazy to me. They do everything they can to let you change your mind.

I pray I stand strong! :)

Hey Tom, didn't know you were an equestrian kinda guy. I had 2 horses when I was a kid and spent a lot of time around horses, one of God's most delightful creations. Not so much lately, but my wife's cousin has a horse ranch just a couple miles from here, and one of their mares just gave birth to a little filly about a month ago.

I'm in FB - share pics of The Dog - garden maybe - but none of my family or other people. I might put in a link of something in news.
I follow few groups - some electric car discussions and couple local groups, that concentrate to development of our town etc.
Most of all - I do not "collect friends" - I have maybe less than 20

dread, that's weird, how could you not know that? There have been quite a few posts with photos and stuff. Just look at my avatar!! I'm not active, but through FB I've connected with some old friends and now they want me to start doing clinics at their places for their riders and boarders. Now that all my joints are replaced, I'll entertain the thought!! Here's me quite a few years ago!! (like 50 years ago? LOL!!)

I check in on FB for a few minutes everyday. I have an app that helps delete political threads. I delete posts by authors that have some agenda and have put a few Friends on Time out but I just ignore a lot of the stuff. The good thing about FB for me is I had lost touch with so many folks and it did enable me to reconnect. But I understand a lot of folks are "hooked" and others take a lot of the junk to heart so ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

I'm going to one better and say that I've turned my back on most news media. Honestly, I'm happier and more peaceful for it. It's not just FB, but so much of the 'legitimate' media too that either turns everything into conflict, tells me news that I don't need but presents it in a way that's meant to get my fur up, fake news everywhere... so much of the news is deliberately wrong that it's impossible to keep track of what's what.

As far as the goings on in the world, I'm about two steps away from being a virtual hermit and I've never been happier. :D

I signed on to Facebook about five years ago & lasted one week!

Conversely, LTG is a treasure & I greatly appreciate the tight moderation.

Beyond these guitar-related boundaries, I think it’s very important to stay informed re national & world affairs.

Well, yeah, I agree, but it's nothing like black and white. If you happen to be a citizen of the US, then I suppose it's important to know who the current president is. Since there's an up coming election, it's important to know who the likely candidates are. But is it important to know what each of them tweet everyday?

Everyone gets to draw the line wherever they want. Personally, I found that drawing the line to exclude almost all of the "info" that's available turns out to be just about right.
