Browsing over at the Gear Page, I had to laugh at one of the listings for a Nocaster reissue. The seller is advertising as a mint relic edition. :?
Um...how could you tell?
In which I answer yet another rhetorical question...
While in Action Music waiting for Guild to return some phone calls so we could order Mrs. Fro's F-30, I inspected three new "Road Worn" Strats. Since they were right next to each other it was obvious that they had been artificially worn to the same pattern. It's kind of hard to describe but it was clear that an imprecise process had been executed on each guitar according to the same pattern.
The second thing was that the boundaries caused by the "wear" were sharp. When I look at the play wear on my basses there is a gradual transition between the worn sections and where the finish is intact. That wasn't there and made the faux relics look artificial to me.
Lastly, I think what might have been dings in the wood of the original were dark paint on the relics.
So I do suspect if you had a Road Worn guitar you could come pretty close to determining whether it was new or used.
But the humor in the description is noted
