We've all got one or two: a story surrounding a purchase of one or two of our guitars. How we snuck it in, how many lawns we had to mow to get it, how much pleading and promising to our wives to let us get it . . .

Let's hear yours. I'll bet we all have some act of covert operation to smuggle that new guitar in the house without letting on.

I'll start it off. Make it short.

Saw a one year old Martin 00-15 in Sam Ash that I couldn't put down. Loved it. Had not been looking for one, but the price was right, and I decided to buy it. Now, my wife and I were leaving for South Carolina the next morning and would be gone for 10 days. I asked the salesman, a friend of mine, to hold it for me, and I will definitely buy it when I came back from vacation.

I figured now I have 10 days to figure out a way to tell my wife I just bought another guitar.

10 days wasn't enough . . .

Came home from vacation, went into town the next day, bought the guitar, brought it home, and showed my wife what I got. She just glared at me. But I got a really good price on it, I said.

Did you pay the mortgage? she said.

"Yes " I said, cradling my new guitar.

Did you pay the gas bill? I said yes.

Whew! That was a close one. :)

You guys think you get in trouble?? You should be around when the truck backs up to the door the day my wife is running the store and they get a fork lift to unload three pallets of them. Thats when I have some explaining to do. :? :?:

Thanks for helping me not become increasingly disinterested in picking up a Mahogany 00. Thanks a lot

Let's see, there; too many reverse negatives there . . . I think that means that now you WANT a mahogany 00.

Hold out for an old M-20. Lots of them out there. Word is they are a little bit more vintage sounding, a little more funky sounding than the 00-15. And a lot more money.

Yes that's exactly what I'm saying!

I'm looking for a newer issue of the 00-15 or the M20 (at least I think I am anyway) - as I'd like to use it as a live guitar and therefore would opt for stability over vintage vibe.

Yep...big brown truck pulled up the other day with two very large boxes containing several instruments & a number of cases & gig bags. Couple more deliveries scheduled in the next several days....some personal, some business. Hoping my JF-55 blends in with the business stuff if my wife happens to be home. :p

Dennis,
All I can say is that you are a gifted man. Pam and I will be married 36 years next month (assuming she keeps me another couple of weeks) and over the years, I've attempted many tried & true as well as tried and unacceptable methods over the years.

With the help of the great guys in this forum, I finally fulfilled a dream of purchasing my Guild 12 string. My maple J30-12 Westerly beaut arrived early last week. This is the right time and place to thank everyone and also to let you know that this time I spent less than a week sleeping on the couch. My tactics must be improving or maybe she's softening up...

It's a matter of pooling all of the resources.

33 years there, 36 over there, 25 here, they all add up to many couch nights and laments.

This is something we should put together, in a leather bound edition, and offer up for sale to the new recruits here with all proceeds going to LTG of course. :D

Maybe Hans can help us out? Guild Guitar Book, The Company, the Instruments and the varied ways to get them in the House, 1952 - ????

Well, I didn't start my retail business to hide personal items from the Mrs. but it hasn't hurt that my own items show up in the midst of the flurry of deliveries over the course of a couple weeks. 8)

No web page yet. Still getting my business software under control. Too many things to try to learn in a short time. Plenty of stuff available though & I'm rather impressed with a few items that arrived this week.

Here is one I thought was really funny.

I was at Rudy's on 48th Street, and Gordon the salesman related this story: He was on the phone with a young woman, taking an order for a $4,000 Santa Cruz. After getting all the particulars, he asked her for her phone number.

"What for?" she asked. He simply stated that when the guitar came in, he would call her and notify her, and she could come in and pick it up.

She said, "Well, okay; but if a male voice answers, hang up the phone. If my husband finds out I'm buying another guitar, he's gonna kill me!"

I like how my friend Eddie in Saginaw did it. Operated a professional music store for about 30 years, and over that time, along with all the new stuff that he would order, a lot of vintage guitars and amps would show up.
Those he kept for himself, rather than selling them, and stored in his basement. I visited him a couple of years ago, to borrow a small Fender amp to use in a local gig. The place was filled with hundereds of vintage amps, guitars, etc., so much so that I was overwhelmed. Felt like I was in Disneyland! Marshalls, Vox, Gibson, Fender, Martin, everything you would possiblly want!
