May be out of print, but should be readily available used or in public libraries. It is classical oriented, as for most of its history that was its main position, but there is some non-classical material as well. ISBN: 978-0025462908

I enjoyed this one a lot. He intersperses the story of having a guitar hand build by a luthier with a nicely done history of the guitar in US.

Also, this is not guitar specific, but a great read of the evolution of music, musical performing, etc. in the US.

Thanks, Walrus. I've noticed the first book you've mentioned on Amazon and am glad to get your feedback. Not familiar with the second suggestion, but sounds very interesting. Thanks again.
