Anyone have a recommendation for a good general history of the guitar, along the lines of Jay Pilzer's book Six String History of America ?
Thanks Brad!May be out of print, but should be readily available used or in public libraries. It is classical oriented, as for most of its history that was its main position, but there is some non-classical material as well. ISBN: 978-0025462908
Thanks, Walrus. I've noticed the first book you've mentioned on Amazon and am glad to get your feedback. Not familiar with the second suggestion, but sounds very interesting. Thanks again.I enjoyed this one a lot. He intersperses the story of having a guitar hand build by a luthier with a nicely done history of the guitar in US.

Also, this is not guitar specific, but a great read of the evolution of music, musical performing, etc. in the US.

Yes, I have both of these and they are very good -- Wheeler's, of course, is a classic. Thanks! These two are on my bookshelf:
