Joan,

I've got a summer place in Old Orchard Beach, just to the south of Portland. However, it's a recent thing for me and I haven't had a chance to look around for guitar shops.

Sorry, can't help you for this weekend. Ask me again in a few weeks when I've had more time to explore.

You don't say from whence your friend comes... let's assume Portland is south for him. Another hour past Portland will put him in Stratham, NH. A visit to the Acoustic Outfitters in Stratham might be of interest. A Guild dealer - but I don't know what is in inventory at the moment.

There's a place there that I remember called Buckdancer's Choice. Not sure what brands they carry new, but they may have something used.
If you can make the trek to Cornish Maine, there's an amazing store called Friendly River Music. Honestly, everyone who loves guitars should visit that place once before they die. I was first brought there in about 1983, but haven't been in a few years. They're inland; pretty close to the NH border.
One thing - they're out in the sticks, and John won't let you use his bathroom. I'm sure that many customers have surreptitiously peed in the driveway.

Buckdancer's Choice is on St John Street in Portland, and is even open on sundays. I went there for the first time last sunday following my nephew's wedding on saturday. It' a nice place with a variety of used guitars, and many different makes of new ones, but I only remember seeing GAD Guilds. Like someone mentioned, Acoustic Outfitters in Stratham, NH is very nice and just an hour from Portland.

Thanks for the great information. I'll try to get it to my friend. She's on a quest for a new (to her anyway) guitar and Guilds and Larrivees are on her list. joan

Update: Go Guild! She just emailed that she got a GAD 30-PDCE at Buckdancer's Choice and loves it.

Bah... I just went through Cornish yesterday and hadn't written this information (from this thread) down yet. Well, I'll be going through there again next week to pick up the boys from camp.

Buckdancer's Choice is definitely going to get a Chazmo fly-by this week, as we're going up to Portland.

Not sure about Acoustic Outfitters though.

Thanks for the tips, guys/gals. -- Chaz

Just make sure you check Friendly River's website for their hours of operation. They're a little odd, with a couple of weekdays being by appointment only. But by all means, GO THERE!

Stig,

I made it there yesterday. Very cool place. Talked with the owner (I guess) for a little while as I had the family in tow.

Some really nice guitars in there. We talked Guilds for a little while. I guess he just sold a Tacoma D-55 last week.

He showed me a couple of Composite Acoustic axes that were really nice. I didn't expect to like their unplugged sound, but I did. Very cool.

Quite a selection of new Taylors, including a couple of R. Taylors that I played briefly.

Wish I'd had more time. My kids really enjoyed the "petting zoo" where they keep their huskies. Beautiful dogs; a little hot on such a warm day. :)

Thanks for the suggestion.

Glad you got to see it! I really love that store. I have to plan a trip up there sometime soon. If you were talking to the guy with the gray beard, that would be John, the owner.
From what I read on their website, I guess they have a really good relationship with Taylor.
I'd recommend a trip there to anyone who is in the area.
